Understanding Depressed

Here is your Tuesday STORY on: SELF DEVELOPMENT: We are all sometimes afraid to admit that our self development is totally down to us as an individual. Any guidance we get is ultimately asking us the question, 'Do we want to take action?' If we take no action, there is no self development! There is a belief that if we are given something free, we don't value it. But if we pay, it has value. I for example was given two concert tickets before Christmas and found the effort to go to the concert was enormous. Yet had I chose to buy the tickets I would have been eager to attend. Self development is no different! If you go to the gym for a year with an aim to shape your body, your tolerance increases. If you are presented with a box of chocolates, you become happy to except one, rather than binge on eight or nine. The value increases when you pay, not necessarily in money but effort too! The story today and subsequent quote is not about payment, but about being bound. If you get everything for free, it is easy not to improve; you haven't spent anything so it doesn't matter! You don't need to spend big, spending on a book once a month would do fine... THE TUNNEL Zenkai, the son of a samurai, journeyed to Edo and there became a retainer of a high official. This high official treated his wife like a slave and she looked frightened at each encounter with her husband. Zenkai fell in love with the official's wife and was discovered. Then in self-defence, he slew the official. This event caused Zenkai to run away with the wife. Both of them later became thieves. But the woman was so greedy that Zenkai grew disgusted. Finally, leaving her, he journeyed far away to the province of Buzen, where he became a wandering mendicant. To atone for his past, Zenkai resolved to accomplish some good deed in his lifetime. Knowing of a dangerous road over the cliff that had caused the death and injury of many persons, he resolved to cut a tunnel through the mountains there. Begging food in the daytime, Zenkai worked at night digging his tunnel. When thirty years had gone by, the tunnel was 2, 280 feet long, 20 feet high and 30 feet wide. Two years before the work was completed, the son of the official he had slain, who was a skilful swordsman, found Zenkai out and came to kill him in revenge. "I will give you my life willingly, " said Zenkai. "Only let me finish this work. On the day it is completed, then you may kill me." So the son awaited the day. Several months passed and Zenkai kept on digging. The son grew tired of doing nothing and began to help with the digging. After he had helped for more than a year, he came to admire Zenkai's strong will and character. At last the tunnel was completed and the people could use it and travel in safety. "Now cut off my head, " said Zenkai. "My work is done." "How can I cut off my own teacher's head?" asked the younger man with tears in his eyes. (A Zen Story) QUOTE: "People are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound." (James Allen). [[ct]]: Understanding Depressed

Christian: When God disciplines, how do you respond?
A devotion this AM by Anabel Gillham, brings out this question. Father God disciplines, what is our response to be? Do you see one of your responses in this? I did, I have rebelled, refused, endured, passively acquiesed, and even retaliated. I am learning it is really best to positively respond. What about you? The Father's Discipline All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. Hebrews 12:11 ALL discipline [discipline of every kind] for the MOMENT [when it is happening] seems NOT to be joyful [not a happy thing, to say the least] but SORROWFUL [difficult to handle or understand; depressing and wearisome] yet to those who have been TRAINED by it [guided growth toward habitual behavior] AFTERWARDS [think about that word] it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. If a child accepts disciplinary action as necessary for maturing, for positive growth, and as coming from a base of love, then AFTERWARDS the discipline will have been profitable. She will have learned (been trained by it), and positive growth will be the result. Don't we long for our children to understand this, to believe us, to know that our discipline comes from a base of love? I'm just as sure that God longs for us to understand and believe that His discipline comes from an unfathomable reservoir of love for us. And if we respond accordingly, we will learn! We'll grow! We'll see the positive results of that discipline in our lives. But, you know, there are alternatives to responding positively to His discipline: I CAN REBEL "I was not wrong! You have no right to treat me this way. I resent Your interference and Your instruction, and I have no intention of going along with Your program. I'll do it my way, thank you." I CAN REFUSE "So maybe I was wrong. But I refuse to change or say I'm sorry. I'm not that difficult to get along with -- I think maybe You're disciplining the wrong person. What about him? What about her?" I CAN SIMPLY ENDURE "Hey, I'll make it. I can handle this. You can't get a good man down and keep him there. I'll come back stronger and better! You keep it up, I'll keep it up. . . ." I CAN PASSIVELY ACQUIESCE "Oh well, you win a few, you lose a few. Into each life some rain must fall. Whatever will be, will be. . . ." I CAN RETALIATE "I'm not going to be a doormat for anyone. I have my rights. I'm a fighter! The name of the game is survival, and I intend to survive!" Then there is, of course, the POSITIVE response: "I'm sorry, Lord. Please don't let me go through this without learning what You want me to learn. I don't want to be stubborn and hardheaded. God, don't ever take Your velvet hand of discipline from my life. I want to change, to grow. And I know You love me and have my best interests at heart. I trust You." And with that response, something will begin to take root within us, something wonderful and fulfilling: the peaceful fruit of righteousness. http://www.lifetime.org/ Brother and Sister we all who belong to Him know that it is not a question of if He will discipline, but when: "?My child, pay attention when the Lord disciplines you. Don't give up when he corrects you. 6 The Lord disciplines everyone he loves. He severely disciplines everyone he accepts as his child.? 7 Endure your discipline. God corrects you as a father corrects his children... God disciplines us for our own good so that we can become holy like him. Hebrews 12:5-7,10
