The Pause Upon Which All Else Relies
by Leo
9 Feb 2012 at 8:56am
Post written by Leo Babauta. There is one little habit I’ve learned that has changed everything else in my life. The pause. When we fail, it’s because we act on urges without thinking, without realizing it. We have the urge to eat junk, and we do it. We have the urge to check email instead [...]
The Thousand Cuts Fitness Program
by Leo
6 Feb 2012 at 10:43am
Post written by Leo Babauta. I’ve trained for marathons, triathlons, 10Ks, a 13.5-hour challenge, Ubanathlons, and more. But my favorite fitness program isn’t one where you train for a major event. It’s where you get fit by a thousand little actions. When the actions are tiny, they are easy. You have no excuse. You can [...]

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post from Tyler Tervooren of Advanced Riskology. I used to have a lot of bad habits. I still do, but I used to have a lot more. Here?s just a small sampling: I woke up late and went to bed early. I procrastinated on my most important work. I [...]

The membership is a monthly subscription of $19.99, but really it’s a commitment to changing your life, and the tools needed to [...]
Creating Silence from Chaos
by Leo
27 Jan 2012 at 3:20pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. We are often afraid of silence, because its emptiness feels idle, boring, unproductive, and scary. And so we fill our lives with chaos, noise, clutter. But silence can be lovely, and therapeutic, and powerful. It can be the remedy for our stress and the habits that crush us. If we [...]
The Habits That Crush Us
by Leo
23 Jan 2012 at 11:26am
‘Don’t panic.’ ~Douglas Adams Post written by Leo Babauta. Why is it that we cannot break the bad habits that stand in our way, crushing our desires to live a healthy life, be fit, simplify, be happier? How is it that our best intentions are nearly always beaten? We want to be focused and productive, [...]
Learning to Sit Alone, in a Quiet Empty Room
by Leo
17 Jan 2012 at 1:49pm
‘All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. Think about some of the problems of our daily lives, and how many of them would be eased if we could learn to sit alone, in a quiet empty room, with contentment. If [...]
Life as a Conscious Practice
by Leo
13 Jan 2012 at 9:15am
‘Everything is practice.’ ~Pele Post written by Leo Babauta. When we learn a martial art, or ballet, or gymnastics, or soccer ? we consciously practice movements in a deliberate way, repeatedly. By conscious, repeated practice, we become good at those movements. Our entire lives are like this, but we’re often less conscious of the practice. [...]

Those of you taking the Clutterfat Challenge this month are facing these problems, and I’m here [...]
Clearing Your Life for a New Year
by Leo
9 Jan 2012 at 12:55pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. Every January, people rush out and get a gym membership, set a list of goals or resolutions, and get ready to take on a new year of frenetic activity. Unfortunately, we don’t often clear space to make room for all this new stuff. The beginning of the year is a [...]

The Law Of Sow And Reap

Here is your Thursday STORY on: ADAPTING TO CHANGE: Some people think that there is a method of how to appear dominating and in charge. Imagine for example, a politician, don't they appear to be totally domineering? What about the President or as we have here in England, a Prime Minister, don't they appear to be always 'in charge' of their behavioural patterns? Broadcasters, high flying business people, high ranking army officials, high ranking government personnel, these and many more seem to have a charisma of strength and determination. So what is their secret? Making sure they are fully alert, and you will notice these people never allow themself to comment unless they have studied the facts. Knowledge is power! If you listen and respond, you will create the same energy and communication skills as these who perfect it professionally. QUOTE: 'When you only ever half listen, you can expect nothing less than only ever being half as effective.' Always pay full attention. Listen and respond, as a well structured response can change the world; more often than not, the structure isn't planned it comes from keeping full attention throughout your response. In effect what your heart tells you to say. If you could ever trust that reaction, you'll realise its potential. Try and remember a moment where you spoke without thinking, and the quality of that comment that was spoken; you may have even thought that it had come from someone else's mouth. Express this power vocally and physically and you will impress. If you knew how to harness this power you would use it regularly Adapting to change in this way is simple. Test, try and see; you may well be impressed yourself. So don't forget to listen and respond from the heart instantly. You will not know unless you try! Now on to today's story... PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE Today's example occurred in 1960. In was an American Presidential debate between Richard Nixon and John F Kennedy. The debate was broadcast both on radio and, for the first time on television. The majority of people who listened to the radio thought Nixon won the debate. But by far the majority watched it on television. Those that did thought Kennedy won. Why? Kennedy was much better at sending 'elect me' messages in a visual way that that of Nixon. (From a book by Nate Booth). QUOTE: 'Every man carries in his eye the exact indication of his rank.' (Ralph Waldo Emerson).

Why do hurt people feel it's their right to hurt people?
They say, "Hell hath no fury..." Following the same thinking (if you can call it thinking), people who are hurting inside feel a great and almost divine sense of entitlement to hurt people and get away with it while no one is allowed to hurt them. I feel the terrorists are like this many times: they strike, but when you strike them back, they cry about it and say, "No fair." I think hurt people can be the most insanely manipulative people on this planet. I think the more they hurt other people, the more they'll hurt- except their own hurt will be shadowed for a while by the hurting of whoever it is they hurt. There's a "Law of Reciprocity" (others call it "The Golden Rule", "The Law of Sowing and Reaping", etc.). I don't know how it works, but when a person hurts another person out of their hurt, it will only make them more miserable. Since repeated hurting of others causes more hurting on a hurt person, what sense does it make to keep hurting others. "Hell hath no jury..."

Why do bad things happen to good people?
It doesn't make sense. If the law of 'Karma' is true, unless, of course, karma takes more than one entire lifetime to come full circle, then how does it explain bad things happening to good people? And what about the "axiom" of 'What comes around goes around?' Another way to say that is the law of sowing and reaping, coined by Jesus Christ. If it is true that we reap what we sow, then why, again, I ask you, do bad things happen to good people?
