Post written by Leo Babauta. Before I learned how to change habits, I was stuck. Self Development

Here is your Saturday STORY on: SOLVING PROBLEMS: Most people solve problems by thrusting themselves headlong into them and hoping they come out smelling of roses. How much attention should you give to a problem? As much as is needed! How best to resolve a problem is initially based upon your store of knowledge and experience. Most every day the smaller problems are resolved using this store; if we don't pause for thought as a bigger problem arises, we'll rush in using this store of principles and beliefs. Pausing will allow us to consider whether we need to add to that store with new information for this new and larger problem. Time may be of the essence, but accuracy has a far better way of equipping you for life. Find the time to acquire the information you need to solve the problem. To RECOGNISE you're not properly equipped to solve a problem is half the battle. It is no sin, you will not lose face, your pride will still be intact and your peers will not ridicule your efforts to approach the problem in the proper manner. In today's story we have displayed honesty and fair play, which is a rare quality in business. But when so much emphasis is placed upon tactics, it is good to hear a story such as this. THE WINDOW SALESMAN Allow me to introduce you to Terry, a window salesman from England. If I take you back about 20 years, you'd know Terry as a complete newbie... a not-long-since teenager who was wet behind the ears in just about everything he attempted. The kind of person who couldn't sell false teeth to his own Granny; let alone compete with the other salespeople in the industry. You know the kind who could sell snow to Eskimos. So. to add a twist to this scenario, Terry's boss decides to send him out on a practical field trip on his first day. He throws him right into the deep end by asking him to visit an interested prospect at the posh end of town... where the big money is in Windows/Double-glazing sales. So off he goes. He was extremely nervous. With his hands shaking and his knees nobbling, he approaches the front door and thuds the door knocker several times. An oldish woman approaches and, after his first shaking introduction, she invites him in. He stays there for over 3 hours. Then, after dozens of cups of tea and mounds of biscuits, the woman signs a contract and purchases over 7000 worth of windows (that's over $11, 000 in U.S. dollars!) And, Here's The REAL Kicker - The woman had already spoken with 6 other dynamite glazing salesmen that week. ALL of them offered her a cheaper quote! That's right - Terry's price was the MOST expensive. He was also the most inexperienced salesman there ever was. So, what happened in the background? And moreover, how can you replicate these powerful sales techniques to step up a notch on your own profit ladder? Here comes the secret. The woman said, "She liked the young lad more than the others." That's ALL there was to it. She didn't care about the extra expense. Even the other slick salesmen couldn't persuade her to pay LESS than this young chap was asking for. The truth is, this lad's first impression shone brighter than any of the sales talk the others subjected the old woman to. First impressions count, and this young lad's courtesy, attitude, politeness and likability are what closed the sale. Not the sales hype. Not the low prices with the gigantic over-hyped benefits. But, the actual 'personality' and 'impression' the kid honestly gave was all that was required. If you market your own products and services, consider what impression you are giving to your prospects. If you appeal to them, then you've already done half of the work. If this means redesigning your presentation, then so be it. If this means going out of your way to be polite, helpful and giving the best possible shopping experience to your customers, then so be it. Is it really too much work to secure those big sales? I'll leave you to ponder on that thought. (by Gary Hanley) QUOTE: 'The soul is dyed the colour of your thoughts. Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you do is who you become.' Be honest ladies, is it too late to contact her?
I met this girl through a self-development class, and there was attraction between the two of us. I'm very shy, so it took a while for me to ask her for her phone #. Ever since I have her phone #, I text and email her occasionally and she'll respond. I told her that we should keep in touch because we might need each other's help in the future, and she agreed...I believe. So, I haven't contacted her in over a week. Should I even bother contacting her ever again? I feel like she's not going to respond to my emails/texts anymore.

I'm 21 and want to train at home to be a dancer and flexible acrobat. What can I do without classes?
I'm a 21 year old female who has no money to attend classes (plus, the town I live in doesn't offer very many good classes that incorporate dance, circus arts, acrobatics, or yoga). I want to start a training regimen that I can do at my home to increase my flexibility (I'd like to be able to to the splits and work towards contortion-ism---I am already pretty flexible but still can't split). Reason being, I am writing my own show and want to turn it into something circus-y, weird, beautiful circus type performance with quite a message. I want to teach myself to dance and increase my flexibility (almost to the contortionist level) and strength training, also come up with yoga routines to do. I'm just afraid of doing it on my own for fear of hurting myself. How can I train myself in strength, grace, performance, and flexibility? Please as much advice, answers, and resources as any number of responses can get me =D I'm so serious about this. Oh! I will also be posting a question about self-development in the areas of self-discipline, self-education, and introspection. I am not looking to be, say, Russian ballerina level, or actual contortionist (although, I could be with proper training). I am broke, live in a town that has dance classes for children (not adults). I want to learn dance, just generally how to move and especially warm-ups and stretches. If there are resources I can use to learn correct body posturing for stretching and warming up, that would be helpful. Along with any ideas on how to practice circus arts in a pretty small close-minded town without literally running off to a circus (not just yet hehe). I think I am looking for resources that anyone may have just to give me something to work with and practice and gain knowledge of dance arts and circus arts. Stretching is super helpful. I am already pretty flexible and do basic yoga every morning and know not to push myself to where it hurts. So I want to learn the proper ways to position my body, basic dance moves and moderate warm-ups, and circus arts. Resources are extremely helpfu Your favorite circus would also be helpful. Your favorite performance. (especially the really weird, dark, or off-the-wall stuff...politically poignant and clown-ey stuff).

Advice/Resources for self-development, education, discipline, introspection?
Hello. I am a 21 yr old woman. For the majority of my life I have been a depressive with an inability to keep friends. For the past 1.5 years I have been working on overcoming this depression (negative thought process) as it has completely held me back from the mighty potential I have. I have lots of dreams and goals and I think they are all beautiful. I am pretty creative in my mind, however I have had a lot of barriers when it comes to actually DOING something. I'll think and think about it, but never actually do any of the things I want to do. I am in the process of self-development to be the best I know I can be (and slowly but surely I'm getting there). I'd like to work on a self-education routine (as I learned nothing from my public school). The main thing I am struggling with is teaching myself a sense of self-discipline. If I had the ability to discipline myself enough to focus and just do any of the things I dream of doing, I feel I could lead a more productive life. However, I keep getting stuck. I try to discipline myself and focus to do what in the long run makes me feel good, however I keep finding ways to put it off, dick around online or by re-organizing my room, etc. I get distracted and it is getting really annoying. I'd like to learn to teach myself discipline so I can lead a healthier life (eating the healthy foods I know I love, exercising, meditating, pampering myself by taking baths and walks and idk anything else...I really don't even know how to pamper myself). I know that by teaching myself discipline I can achieve the goals I have set for educating myself, creating my own little window-sill garden and living holistic lifestyle and a sustainable lifestyle, working towards my dream job (which idk what it is yet), and being a creative, artistic, expressive, introspective (getting to really know myself), and active person. I guess this isn't so much a question as much as it is advice on self-discipline (mostly) then self-education, how to go about pampering myself (not in expensive ways, but...spiritual ways like bathing and candles and magic and such) so that I can figure out how to be introspective to get to know myself better and how to lead a more active creative artistic wholesome lifestyle and eventually have my own house and farm and family and horses hehe. I'm looking for advice, personal experience, and resources. I'd appreciate alllllll the help I can get =D Thank you!
