How to Fail at Habits
by Leo
24 Apr 2012 at 11:28am
Post written by Leo Babauta. Before I learned how to change habits, I was stuck. I kept trying to change various habits — running, eating healthier, waking earlier, getting out of debt, ending procrastination — and I kept failing. I got very good at failing, in fact. Looking back on those days, given the power [...]

Here is your Sunday STORY on: THE LOVE OF WISDOM: Various studies have shown that if you enjoy your work and work for joy, it has a positive effect on your health and aging. That of course is following a medical survey, but within WISDOM it is sensible to be aware that too much stress for example can cause health problems. So here we have the CAUSE and EFFECT theory. If we have a career that gives us ill-health we should seriously consider the value of that position. In other words source out the reason for the stress and try and either eliminate it or come to terms with the problem and try and reduce its impact upon your health. Today's illustration is an excerpt from a book. It explains that following a serious incident with health we can remain positive or we can allow its implications to destroy what life we have left. 'A stitch in time saves nine, ' a proverb we can use to help us with our health. If we ever have warning signals that our job is too stressful. We need to reduce the stress or eliminate it. This is WISE. In Wisdom we need to see the beauty of this statement and act. We can see the CAUSE and need to act to save our health from deteriorating. This is not some new glaring piece of news you are hearing, but a timely reminder that WISDOM travels throughout every aspect of our life. If we know what is WISE then we ought to actively apply it. Adversity can strike us all, but the fight against it must be positive. POSITIVE ACTION DURING REHABILITATION Duni Chand was a business executive in his early fifties who suffered a sudden heart attack. His cardiac evaluation and long-term prognosis were excellent. Despite the assurance that he had only a minor, uncomplicated attack and was making an excellent recovery, he simply couldn't get over the mental shock of "having a heart attack." Neither psychotherapy nor physiotherapy helped him during his rehabilitation period. He was somehow convinced that he could no longer lead an active, productive life, and he gave up all efforts in this direction. He started suffering from depression and felt he was growing old rather fast. As a matter of fact, he soon began looking much older than his age, and asked for early retirement from his job. Then there was Shyman Aunder, about the same age and holding a comparable position, who suffered a rather similar heart attack. Although his long-term prognosis wasn't quite as good as Duni Chand's, he returned to work after two months and said, "I like my job better than ever before. It may seem surprising but it is true that I work fewer hours now but achieve more. I'm no longer rushing for the deadline; somehow I just seem to plan things better. I'm more productive, and I enjoy life. I find time to relax and look around; I have time to stand and stare. I never knew the world was so beautiful." Speaking of his wife, Shyman Sunder said appreciatively, "Earlier I never took time to see her lips enrich as she smiled, or her eyes brighten as we talked." (An extract from "Your Life Is In Your Hands." By Krishan Chopra M.D.) QUOTE: "We need quite time to examine our lives openly and honestly... Spending quiet time alone gives your mind an opportunity to renew itself and create order." (Susan L. Taylor, U.S. Journalist). [[ct]]: Philosophy Now

I hate religion , what should I do?
Being born as a Hindu and raised as a theist, I used to have a burning hatred for Atheists, but now at my late teens I think I have matured enough to understand the world better and right now I am so confused. I mean as I grew older certainly I started questioning my own beleifs before anything. And guess what it makes sense to me. I question Hinduism the most but the original parts of it make sense to me the most. And I follow Buddha alot who said to beleive in something because it makes sense but not because someone told you so or if your born into it. so anyways the thing is I think Atheists are very gifted people and even though this doesnt mean anything at all but God bless atheists...and no offense or anything im just showing respect. I basically follow Indian philosophies now just doing meditation and yoga. but the thing is i like all this cultural diversity in the world but studying modern events and just reading the newspaper makes me sick. I think religion is a weapon of mass murder itself. Im not saying its the abrahamic faiths because there is terrorism in every religion whether its islam and christianity or HInduism or Buddhism. I have a burning hatred for religion now because I love life too much and I have found one of the sources of evil which is religion. I beleive in God in a scientific pantheist way just like the ancient hindus and i think God has no barriers and neither should we because to me God is mother nature and religion is nothing but barriers. im just really confused. am i wrong? am i mental im just wondering. wow just cause of the first 2 answers im definately crossing off christianity off my list. so congrats ok to all you Christians if this makes it ANY clear "I like your Christ, but I do not like your Christians, your Christians are so unlike your Christ"--Gandhi and like i said , Atheists are the most gifted people on this earth. Even though i cannot call myself an Atheist, they are the best people around and I will show respect from now on. I cant help it man. How can you not hate something that has killed more people and forms of life than anything imagined? Im sorry but that whole showdown back in Mumbai last year did it for me. Fundementalists exist in every religion and those bastards will kill innocents all the time.

As a student of today, what name would you describe this period in time 2000-2010?
ex. there was the renaissance time period before. Elements from pop culture, canadian stories of historical value, issues of society, and popular philosophy. Now, this isnt just the whole question. Im doing a twenty minute presentation on what i chose and why. I jsut cant figure out one. Everyone is doing something technological so i wanna do something different. And just add a short 'why would you choose that?'
