Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Chris Guillebeau of ChrisGuillebeau.com. Imagine a life where all your time is spent on the things you want to do. Imagine giving your greatest attention to a project you create yourself, instead of working as a cog in a machine that exists to make other people rich. [...]

‘He who is contented is rich.’ ~Lao Tzu Post written by Leo Babauta. There has been little in my life that has made as much an impact as learning to be content — with my life, where I am, what I’m doing, what I have, who I’m with, who I am. This little trick changes [...]

How to Fail at Habits
by Leo
24 Apr 2012 at 11:28am
Post written by Leo Babauta. Before I learned how to change habits, I was stuck. I kept trying to change various habits — running, eating healthier, waking earlier, getting out of debt, ending procrastination — and I kept failing. I got very good at failing, in fact. Looking back on those days, given the power [...]

Here is your Saturday STORY on: SOLVING PROBLEMS: If you have a problem, what do you do and where do you go? Firstly we must be aware that being choked by a problem will only make you want to kick and scream. The resultant decision would be a forced one under duress. Ideally you would want to take time, care and attention over every decision. To do this with a good degree of success we must be within a calm state of mind. If we are confronted with a problem and a state of anguish and frustration arose we must first spot the condition and then resist it from affecting any decision we make. More often than not we forget to be grateful for the other things in life that we have. Today's story illustrates how an illness can suddenly make you see life clearly; and sadly for the lady who wrote this, too clear too late. IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER (written after discovery of terminal cancer) I would have talked less and listened more. I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded. I would have eaten the popcorn in the "GOOD" living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace. I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth. I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed. I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage. I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains. I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life. I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day. I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime. Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment realizing that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle. When my kids kissed me impetuously, would never have said, "Later, now go get washed up for dinner." There would have been more "I love you's" ... more "I'm sorry's" ... but mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute ... look at it and really see it ... live it .. and never give it back. (Erma Bombeck) QUOTE: 'You have to make a conscious choice every day to shed the old - whatever 'the old' means for you. (Sarah Ban Breathnach) [[ct]]: Personal Finance

Does college matter in the business world?
If you want to go into finance, like into personal finance advisory or investment banking, does it really matter where you went to college? i have been passionate about finance and economics since seventh grade, and as a high school student have done some work in the field with my local city and other businesses. I do have connections into the investment banking houses who say I will be a rising star in the field. But with the advent of all this free information, must I really hand over $50K per year to some university to get recognized in the business world? Or what if I went to community college, excelled there, and continued to teach myself and gain experience? If I went to JC, one thing I could do is apply for a finance job, but offer to work for less than a college graduate. I'd say that in return for gaining experience, il take less money. By the time my classmates who went to 4 year colleges come out, il have more experience and theoretically be more marketable. This plan came from Peter Schiff. What do you say on this?

Question re power of attorney in NYS and risk to this person?
I've been requested to be an "alternative agent" to the power of attorney for my parents. My question is if my parents incur debt that goes beyond their estate (let's say they get ill and incur a lot of medical/hospital/nursing home costs) will I be responsible to pay it out of my personal finances? Are there any other risks involved in taking on such a responsiblity. This is about NY State.
