The Pause Upon Which All Else Relies
by Leo
9 Feb 2012 at 8:56am
Post written by Leo Babauta. There is one little habit I’ve learned that has changed everything else in my life. The pause. When we fail, it’s because we act on urges without thinking, without realizing it. We have the urge to eat junk, and we do it. We have the urge to check email instead [...]
The Thousand Cuts Fitness Program
by Leo
6 Feb 2012 at 10:43am
Post written by Leo Babauta. I’ve trained for marathons, triathlons, 10Ks, a 13.5-hour challenge, Ubanathlons, and more. But my favorite fitness program isn’t one where you train for a major event. It’s where you get fit by a thousand little actions. When the actions are tiny, they are easy. You have no excuse. You can [...]

Creating Silence from Chaos
by Leo
27 Jan 2012 at 3:20pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. We are often afraid of silence, because its emptiness feels idle, boring, unproductive, and scary. And so we fill our lives with chaos, noise, clutter. But silence can be lovely, and therapeutic, and powerful. It can be the remedy for our stress and the habits that crush us. If we [...]
The Habits That Crush Us

‘Don’t panic.’ ~Douglas Adams Post written by Leo Babauta. Why is it that we cannot break the bad habits that stand in our way, crushing our desires to live a healthy life, be fit, simplify, be happier? How is it that our best intentions are nearly always beaten? We want to be focused and productive, [...]
Learning to Sit Alone, in a Quiet Empty Room
by Leo

‘All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. Think about some of the problems of our daily lives, and how many of them would be eased if we could learn to sit alone, in a quiet empty room, with contentment. If [...]
Life as a Conscious Practice

‘Everything is practice.’ ~Pele Post written by Leo Babauta. When we learn a martial art, or ballet, or gymnastics, or soccer ? we consciously practice movements in a deliberate way, repeatedly. By conscious, repeated practice, we become good at those movements. Our entire lives are like this, but we’re often less conscious of the practice. [...]

by Leo
9 Jan 2012 at 12:55pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. Every January, people rush out and get a gym membership, set a list of goals or resolutions, and get ready to take on a new year of frenetic activity. Unfortunately, we don’t often clear space to make room for all this new stuff. The beginning of the year is a [...]

Pain And Failure

Here is your Friday STORY on: HAPPINESS: Happiness is the result of action. We know this but don't often apply it. Practical Philosophy isn't a serious study that would take four years at college or university. It is a reminder of good principles, beliefs and life's fundamentals. So happiness is a result of action. But his is positive action of course. You may think a monk or a nun does nothing. But their action is offering their soul to the lord. For every action a criminal does, it is one step nearer to trouble. This of course is stating the obvious. You will also know that greed, desire and keeping up with the Jones's can cause heartache and unhappiness. We know this but we still subscribe to it. Not in a big way, but in a small way. QUOTE: 'Boredom is simply a lack of attention.' (Christopher Fremantle - 1906 - 1978 Philosopher, Teacher). This may not apply to you, but many people desire to eat when they are bored! The answer to boredom is to become attentive and not eat (or over eat). To start a desire for anything other than a necessity begins a spiralling effect. If you don't get it on your first visit, the intensity of that desire gets bigger and stronger. It can start to take up more and more of your life. It engulfs everything. If you can control your desire, you can control your happiness. RELEASING THE COWS (Told by Master Thich Nhat Hanh) One day the Buddha was sitting in the wood with thirty or forty monks. They had an excellent lunch and they were enjoying the company of each other. There was a farmer passing by and the farmer was very unhappy. He asked the Buddha and the monks whether they had seen his cows passing by. The Buddha said they had not seen any cows passing by. The farmer said, "Monks, I'm so unhappy. I have twelve cows and I don't know why they all ran away. I have also a few acres of a sesame seed plantation and the insects have eaten up everything. I suffer so much I think I am going to kill myself. The Buddha said, "My friend, we have not seen any cows passing by here. You might like to look for them in the other direction." So the farmer thanked him and ran away, and the Buddha turned to his monks and said, "My dear friends, you are the happiest people in the world. You don't have any cows to lose. If you have too many cows to take care of, you will be very busy. "That is why, in order to be happy, you have to learn the art of cow releasing (laughter). You release the cows one by one. In the beginning you thought that those cows were essential to your happiness, and you tried to get more and more cows. But now you realize that cows are not really conditions for your happiness; they constitute an obstacle for your happiness. That is why you are determined to release your cows." QUOTE: "We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.' (Charles Kingsley).

what do you christians out there think of this?
why did god make us when he new we would sin, suffer and die? the only way i can get my head around this is to think we need to suffer the consequences of sin, to learn from its fruit (tree of knowledge) .and be disgusted with it. to learn to hate it so we become loyal subjects to god. so we would become angels that unlike the original whom caused a war in heaven, when one third rebelled....we would be better subjects . tested down here on earth in a atmosphere where our own brain matter is hot wired to fiercely desire pleasures and to experience torturous pain and failures. and be eye witness to some unspeakable evils. this whole thing is set up as a test. that way heaven never has to endure evil rebellion, because its new subjects have been tested. it says we will even judge the angels, so is this because basically we will know better. the bible says that even angels are watching and learning. what do you think of my observation. what biblical truths support or not this theory.

LETTERS; Kids Don't Need Protection From Every Little Risk

11 Nov 2007 at 12:00am  To the Editor: Re ''Childhood for Dummies'' (editorial, Nov. 4): Parents of my generation were taught to remove pain and failure from our lives. ''No, you can't hang upside down on the monkey bars,'' and ''Yes, everyone gets a trophy.'' These are the ideas that guided our lives. Eliminate risk even at the expense of fun and experience. Failure is...
