Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Chris Guillebeau of ChrisGuillebeau.com. Imagine a life where all your time is spent on the things you want to do. Imagine giving your greatest attention to a project you create yourself, instead of working as a cog in a machine that exists to make other people rich. [...]

Post written by Leo Babauta. Before I learned how to change habits, I was stuck. I kept trying to change various habits — running, eating healthier, waking earlier, getting out of debt, ending procrastination — and I kept failing. I got very good at failing, in fact. Looking back on those days, given the power [...]

Overcoming Depression

Here is your Tuesday STORY on: SELF DEVELOPMENT: The same way use of self development is found in both motivation and self esteem, and that is to plan using small and achievable goals. If you have an absence of goals, you have an absence of self development. To remind you we are not talking about huge goals but small achievable ones. QUOTE: 'Look for more and more things in every day to appreciate. Then watch your life in the days and weeks ahead blossom before you.' (Eva). As with any goal planning, they needed to be routed using fundamental principles. Doing this ensures that you are creating positive actions. Today's story examines the benefits of being routed with sound principles. FREEDOM TO SOAR One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Multicoloured creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds darting and dancing in the heady atmosphere above the earth. As the strong winds gusted against the kites, a string kept them in check. Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining string and the cumbersome tail kept them in tow, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say, "Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!" They soared beautifully even as they fought the imposed restriction of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose. "Freedom at last" it seemed to say. "Freedom to fly with the wind." Yet freedom from restraint simply put it at the mercy of an unsympathetic breeze. It fluttered ungracefully to the ground and landed in a tangled mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. "Freedom at last, " freedom to lie powerless in the dirt, to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to lodge lifeless against the first obstruction. How much like kites we sometimes are. The Lord gives us adversity and restrictions, rules to follow from which we can grow and gain strength. Restraint is a necessary counterpart to the winds of opposition. Some of us tug at the rules so hard that we never soar to reach the heights we might have obtained. We keep part of the commandment and (pardon the pun) never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground. Let us each rise to the great heights our Heavenly Father has in store for us, recognizing that some of the restraints that we may chafe under are actually the steadying force that helps us ascend and achieve. (Lessons From Life, Chapter 12 - Free To Soar - Wayne B. Lynn) QUOTE: 'In absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia. (Unknown Author). How Do You Overcome Depression?
All my life i have been a very happy person, I always used to look at others who were depressed and used to think how pathetic it was to be unhappy when there are people with a lot worse situations. Now i understand how they felt. The last 4 months have been a very dark period in my life im sure it all started at my new job which i now don't have due to work shortage, i was very good at my job and learnt fast. I only worked with one other person. My boss would always give me great praise and the co-worker didn't like this and started to try and bully me, i had looked so hard for a job for months so i just bit my tongue and did the yes sir no sir drill. i soon found myself being nasty to others and this is the last thing i ever want to do what comes around goes around, so a month goes by and its really getting to me and i feel like i'm about to blow to pieces (i have real bad temper if and when it does come out REAL bad!) but im just holding it all down another month goes by and me and the co worker both got layed out of work, from then i haven't seen him but i still haven't returned to my normal self i dont know if this has been inflicted by him or not. but for two months now i have felt like im falling into a spiraling hole of unhappines and spend most of my time cyring trying not to let my family found out because they would be so upset to so me like this. i have nether thought of suicide before and would never take my own life i dont beleive in permant fixes for tempory problems but when im crying and at a real low i cant stop thinking how good it would be to just be dead, this is weird for me as i have genuinly felt happy all my life (obvousily everyone has thier lows) but this is something different that i have never felt before and dont want to have to start take anti-depressents or go to the doctor as im only 18. Currently im trying to do as much exersice as possible as this really does make a difference but only for a very short duration afterwards, people say try and keep your mind active but i find this doesnt help because as soon as i hit a point were you cant(going to sleep at night) all those feelings come flooding in like a burst river dam worst than if i think about how unhappy i am all day. i really do need help tho im not sure if its linked to the stress but im starting to get nose bleeds not running but blotches when i blow my nose which was very frightening for me as ive never seen blood come out my nose in my entire life even when i broke it badly, when i feel really bad it feels like my pulse gets harder (not faster) and i get tingly feelings around and below my heart which is the scariest of all and really hoping its just in my head and there not actual physical pains. im looking for truth full answers if one thinks i should go to the doctor then i will accept the answers given and take the advice and go but i really want to try and fight this on my own. please no silly comments. thanks for your time.

What are the natural methods to overcome depression?
Hi, I'm a final year Architecture student and am designing a retreat for people who are suffering from depression. At the retreat i'm not trying to cure clinical depression but try to begin to overcome it through natural means rather than just anti-depression meds. My questions are as follows: 1.What are the natural methods to overcome depression? 2.What are the different types of depression and which of the natural methods will work on it? 3.Do depressed people feel isolated and the need to escape? 4.Do they feel as if they are from a different universe and no one understands them? 5.Do depressed people feel worse when they meet people who are suffering from the same condition or better? Thanks for your help. Muse
