Creating Silence from Chaos
by Leo
27 Jan 2012 at 3:20pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. We are often afraid of silence, because its emptiness feels idle, boring, unproductive, and scary. And so we fill our lives with chaos, noise, clutter. But silence can be lovely, and therapeutic, and powerful. It can be the remedy for our stress and the habits that crush us. If we [...]
The Habits That Crush Us

‘Don’t panic.’ ~Douglas Adams Post written by Leo Babauta. Why is it that we cannot break the bad habits that stand in our way, crushing our desires to live a healthy life, be fit, simplify, be happier? How is it that our best intentions are nearly always beaten? We want to be focused and productive, [...]

‘All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. Think about some of the problems of our daily lives, and how many of them would be eased if we could learn to sit alone, in a quiet empty room, with contentment. If [...]

‘Everything is practice.’ ~Pele Post written by Leo Babauta. When we learn a martial art, or ballet, or gymnastics, or soccer ? we consciously practice movements in a deliberate way, repeatedly. By conscious, repeated practice, we become good at those movements. Our entire lives are like this, but we’re often less conscious of the practice. [...]

Clearing Your Life for a New Year

Post written by Leo Babauta. Every January, people rush out and get a gym membership, set a list of goals or resolutions, and get ready to take on a new year of frenetic activity. Unfortunately, we don’t often clear space to make room for all this new stuff. The beginning of the year is a [...]

How to Have the Best Year of Your Life (without Setting a Single Goal)
by guest
5 Jan 2012 at 9:15am
Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Jeff Goins of Goins, Writer. This new year, do something different: stop setting goals. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results, then making resolutions for another year is a sure-fire way to drive yourself crazy. I did [...]

Here is your Saturday STORY on: SOLVING PROBLEMS: If you are a generous person, people will be generous back. If you are a mean person, or a scrooge, then it will be you who grumbles about every other individual not being too helpful. So it appears to make sense that whenever possible 'sew your seeds of goodness' then they will eventually arrive back in your lap. Give out happiness; you'll get happiness flooding back. I'll give you two quick examples of negative thoughts and positive. Thoughts related to what mood and feeling you outwardly express. Walk through a supermarket all grumpy and sad, and I would gamble you meet nobody you know and you'll not remember picking anything up. Walk through with a smile on your face and you'll meet all your neighbours, your long lost cousin, your aunt Connie and your old school pal. Be happy and your life will improve. Here is today's story... GOOD THINGS About a year ago, a couple with three children moved into the apartment next door to me. I never hear any noise from the children, but the parents were always yelling at the kids, not in a constructive tone, but more on the threatening side. When I am in my bathroom it is quite loud. We met often in the hallway when we were coming or going. I always spoke, but the only answer I ever got was a hello from the four-year old girl. I usually go out for breakfast and one day when I returned they were just coming from their apartment and the little girl was holding the door open for the others. I remained in the car doing unnecessary things because I wasn't too eager to be snubbed. The parents were telling her to hurry and get in the car (they were parked next to me). I looked up and saw the little girl was still holding the door open, waiting for me. I am handicapped to the point that I can't hurry at anything, but I hurried as much as I could and thanked her. She was smiling from ear to ear. That afternoon I was at the K-Mart and I saw a white teddy bear. I thought of the little girl and said to myself, "I bet she would like that" so I bought it. I forgot to tell you how much I was touched by her act of kindness. I wrote a note saying how much her act of kindness had touched a soft spot in an old man's heart and I didn't even know her name. The next day there was a knock on the door and it was the little girl and her father. She was so proud of her bear and thanked me like I had never been thanked before. Then I noticed her mother and the other children were there in the hall too. The mother and father both thanked me. Now when we meet in the hall we all speak, and in a friendly manner I might add. As time passes, I don't hear that yelling as often, in fact, hardly at all. Last night we had about 4 inches of snow. I looked out at my car and wondered how I was going to keep my doctor's appointment because I can only exert myself just so long and then rest for a while. I didn't have that much time. The temperature was zero, so I bundled up and went out to remove the snow. When I opened the outside door, there was my car with all the snow removed. I can't express how I felt at that moment. The man next door was the only person I knew in the whole building, so when I saw him the next day, I asked him if he was the good guy that removed my snow. He said NO. He wanted to but his wife said she wanted to do it. Isn't it amazing how the small kind act of a 4-year-old girl can change so many things for the better? My guardian angel says that more good things come from small acts. (Russ Grover - 84 years old). QUOTE: 'Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.' (Jim Rohn, American Business Philosopher).

Whats your understanding of the philosophy of non-attachment in buddhism, gurdiefs principle of "identificati"?
...and the taoist sections below... (They all seem to describing the same thing??) TAO - Chapter 2 "All in the world know the beauty of the beautiful, and in doing this they have (the idea of) what ugliness is; they all know the skill of the skilful, and in doing this they have (the idea of) what the want of skill is. So it is that existence and non-existence give birth the one to (the idea of) the other; that difficulty and ease produce the one (the idea of) the other; that length and shortness fashion out the one the figure of the other; that (the ideas of) height and lowness arise from the contrast of the one with the other; that the musical notes and tones become harmonious through the relation of one with another; and that being before and behind give the idea of one following another. Therefore the sage manages affairs without doing anything, and conveys his instructions without the use of speech. All things spring up, and there is not one which declines to show itself; they grow, and there is no claim made for their ownership; they go through their processes, and there is no expectation (of a reward for the results). The work is accomplished, and there is no resting in it (as an achievement). The work is done, but how no one can see; 'Tis this that makes the power not cease to be." more on non-attachment... http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Olympus/5208/karmayoga/nonattachment.html tell me what you think?

is my k & n air filter a good shape?
i recently bought a k&n filter from an auto store and it seems to be a shape the is different to what i expected, i am used to seeing the shapes that are large from the attachement end then get smaller in diameter with the length, instead i opened the box and the smaller end was the attachment side and the filter becomes larger in diameter towards the end. Also at the end of the filter (non-attachment side) it doesnt have plastic, it has filter for air to pass through. Also it is a little smaller than others i have seen. (Although it was recommended by one of the store members). Sorry if this is confusing. My main question is whether this would be as good air flow as what i would get in comparison to the other shape. (Its for a Holden VT commodore)

Do Christians know that Christianity is derived from Buddhism .?
i asked a question before about why Jesus went missing from age 12 to 30..... scholars believe he traveled to the east .... you know Himalayan and China...and picked up Buddhism. Buddhism teaches a lot that Jesus taught... example The greatest achievement is selflessness. The greatest worth is self-mastery. The greatest quality is seeking to serve others. The greatest precept is continual awareness. The greatest medicine is the emptiness of everything. The greatest action is not conforming with the worlds ways. The greatest magic is transmuting the passions. The greatest generosity is non-attachment. The greatest goodness is a peaceful mind. The greatest patience is humility. The greatest effort is not concerned with results. The greatest meditation is a mind that lets go. The greatest wisdom is seeing through appearances. how many of you are real Christians? ha ha.... its hard to believe ......but today Christianity is nothing like Christ taught haters....
