Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Chris Guillebeau of ChrisGuillebeau.com. Imagine a life where all your time is spent on the things you want to do. Imagine giving your greatest attention to a project you create yourself, instead of working as a cog in a machine that exists to make other people rich. [...]

‘He who is contented is rich.’ ~Lao Tzu Post written by Leo Babauta. There has been little in my life that has made as much an impact as learning to be content — with my life, where I am, what I’m doing, what I have, who I’m with, who I am. This little trick changes [...]

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Matt Madeiro of Make Every Day Count. Let?s see if this rings any bells. When the clock hits 8, I sit. I plop back in my rolling chair, crack open the laptop on my desk, and spend the next nine hours with my butt glued firmly to [...]

‘Distraction is the only thing that consoles us for miseries and yet it is itself the greatest of our miseries.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. ‘Begin at once to live, and count each separate day as a separate life.’ ~Seneca Post written by Leo Babauta. I’m not a rich man, nor do I fly around the world and drink champagne with famous people in exotic locales, nor do I own a sports car or SUV or a yacht. And yet, [...]
What I?ve Learned About Learning

‘We learn more by looking for the answer to a question and not finding it than we do from learning the answer itself.’ ~Lloyd Alexander Post written by Leo Babauta. I am a teacher and an avid learner, and I’m passionate about both. I’m a teacher because I help Eva homeschool our kids — OK, [...]

Post written by Leo Babauta. Today (April 30) is my 39th Un-un-birthday, and as usual, the day is a good day to pause and reflect. Last year I wrote 38 Life Lessons I?ve Learned in 38 Years, and people seemed to find some use in it. This year, I thought I’d share an additional lesson [...]
How to Fail at Habits
by Leo

Post written by Leo Babauta. Before I learned how to change habits, I was stuck. I kept trying to change various habits — running, eating healthier, waking earlier, getting out of debt, ending procrastination — and I kept failing. I got very good at failing, in fact. Looking back on those days, given the power [...]

Negative Thoughts

Here is your Thursday STORY on: ADAPTING TO CHANGE: Is change an important part of your life? It is integral! It is like the wind in nature; let me explain: GREAT BARRIER REEF Most people would be aware of the Great Barrier Reef, stretching some 1, 800 miles from New Guinea to Australia. Tour guides regularly take visitors to view the reef. On one tour, the guide was asked an interesting question. "I notice that the lagoon side of the reef looks pale and lifeless, while the ocean side is vibrant and colourful, " a traveller observed. "Why is this?" The guide gave an interesting answer: "The coral around the lagoon side is in still water, with no challenge for its survival. It dies early. The coral on the ocean side is constantly being tested by wind, waves, storms - surges of power. It has to fight for survival every day of its life. As it is challenged and tested it changes and adapts. It grows healthy. It grows strong. And it reproduces." Then he added this telling note: "That's the way it is with every living organism." (Unknown Author). That's how it is with people. Challenged and tested, we come alive! Like coral pounded by the sea, we grow. Physical demands can cause us to grow stronger. Mental and emotional stress can produce tough-mindedness and resiliency. Spiritual testing can produce strength of character and faithfulness. If you want to feel the wind through your hair a little more often, then be ready for the changes in life. These changes are more certain than even the very things we expect to happen. "Be good at dealing with problems and with change. Little is more certain to happen, both today and tomorrow!" QUOTE: "Within you right now is the power to do things you never dreamed possible. This power becomes available to you just as soon as you can change your beliefs." (Dr. Maxwell Maltz, 1899 - 1975, Author). [[ct]]: Negative Thoughts

what is good for anxiety?
Hey, I'm 17 and i have quite bad anxiety. I basically get anxiety attacks maybe 3 times a week. I've been told by this woman i go to see that its due to my negative mind frame. It affects my relationship with my boyfriend too sometimes :/ I go to see a councilor every 2 weeks. I know i'm very young to have this, apart from the breathing exercises i have been given and to change negative thoughts in to positive points of view, what else do you know of that works? home remedies, anything that could have maybe helped you :) Be nice please, very much appreciated :) xx

Can someone edit this essay about the poem "We Real Cool" for me and tell me how i can make it better?
I was supposed to be analyzing the theme of the poem, and it had to include a thesis, an appropriate pattern of organization, and necessary transitions. This is my essay ; Older generations always see teens as reckless, sometime for good reasons, and example of this is Gwendolyn Brooks? We Real Cool. The way she describes the boys in the poem gives off a negative tone towards their actions. The first half of the poem helps characterize the boys being described. The first stanza says ?we real cool. we / left school. we? (lines 1-2). This automatically tells us that they are teens because this is something someone in the higher levels of school would do. That being said, it also means that these teens think doing bad things are cool or ?in style?, but since they do not go to school then that means only the uneducated feel this way leading to a street lifestyle. The second stanza, ?Lurk late. we / Strike straight. we? tells us their hobbies (2-3). ?Lurking late? not something a typical good person would do willingly (2-3). And the use of the word ?lurking? provokes negative negative thoughts. ?Striking straight? can have two meanings, but both are bad ?. One meaning is to play pool, but since their characteristics have already been established it could mean they hustle people or play for money. the other meaning is getting into fights a lot, but the use of the word ?strike? makes one think of a snake which is sly and deadly. The second half adds more to what is already thought of them. The third stanza says ?Sing sin. we / Thin gin. we? (4-5). Singing sin is well past the point of just singing. it show how freely they do evil things. whereas the last stanza ?Jazz June. we / Die soon? says it all (7-8). Jazzing in its verb tense means to have sex, so these guys, on top of what they are doing, are sleeping around with women. this rebellious lifestyle of,staying out late and constant hustling, fighting, dropping out of school, drinking and sex will inevitably result in the last line, ?Die soon? (8). conclusively, this poem is based off of the evil decision that these teens make, and it may not just be a view on bad teens, but teens in general.

i dont know how to handle my sister's illness?
my sister, to whom i am extremely close, has been diagnosed with an illness, which is a tumor, not exactly cancerous, but needs chemo etc. doctor says she can live for long as it can be treated like a chronic illness. but she is very depressed and shattered by this. I have tried 2 years to give her courage, confidence, positive thinking, to make her be pro-active in her disease mANAGEMENT, eat well, medidate etc. i feel positive thinking is essential and constantly encourage her, read latest treatments, examples of long-term survivors etc. i recovered from health problems by positivre thinking, lifestyle changes, meditation. But I am not able to get my sister to pull herself together to beat the illness, She is always scared, hunching in depression, lying down with no energy, thinking of side effects of medicines etc etc , refuses to be cheerful, active, refuses meditation etc etc . i am scared negative thoughts and lifestyle will aggravate her illness. I am tired, frustrated and very depressed I constantly think of her and worry that she is not pulling herself together. i have seen yoga, meditation etc do wonders to me. Her lack of initiative in curing herself is draining my physical and mental health and affecting me day-to-day. Professional help for such conditions/ support groups are not options in India,
