Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Chris Guillebeau of ChrisGuillebeau.com. Imagine a life where all your time is spent on the things you want to do. Imagine giving your greatest attention to a project you create yourself, instead of working as a cog in a machine that exists to make other people rich. [...]
The Little Guide to Contentedness

‘He who is contented is rich.’ ~Lao Tzu Post written by Leo Babauta. There has been little in my life that has made as much an impact as learning to be content — with my life, where I am, what I’m doing, what I have, who I’m with, who I am. This little trick changes [...]

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Matt Madeiro of Make Every Day Count. Let?s see if this rings any bells. When the clock hits 8, I sit. I plop back in my rolling chair, crack open the laptop on my desk, and spend the next nine hours with my butt glued firmly to [...]

‘Distraction is the only thing that consoles us for miseries and yet it is itself the greatest of our miseries.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. I’ll be the first to admit that I fall victim to the trap of the Internet — a wonderful empowering tool that can fill your day with distractions, [...]
How to Live Well

‘Begin at once to live, and count each separate day as a separate life.’ ~Seneca Post written by Leo Babauta. I’m not a rich man, nor do I fly around the world and drink champagne with famous people in exotic locales, nor do I own a sports car or SUV or a yacht. And yet, [...]
What I?ve Learned About Learning

‘We learn more by looking for the answer to a question and not finding it than we do from learning the answer itself.’ ~Lloyd Alexander Post written by Leo Babauta. I am a teacher and an avid learner, and I’m passionate about both. I’m a teacher because I help Eva homeschool our kids — OK, [...]

Post written by Leo Babauta. Today (April 30) is my 39th Un-un-birthday, and as usual, the day is a good day to pause and reflect. Last year I wrote 38 Life Lessons I?ve Learned in 38 Years, and people seemed to find some use in it. This year, I thought I’d share an additional lesson [...]
How to Fail at Habits
by Leo
24 Apr 2012 at 11:28am
Post written by Leo Babauta. Before I learned how to change habits, I was stuck. I kept trying to change various habits — running, eating healthier, waking earlier, getting out of debt, ending procrastination — and I kept failing. I got very good at failing, in fact. Looking back on those days, given the power [...]

‘Everything you can imagine is real.’ ~Pablo Picasso Post written by Leo Babauta. Metaphors For Life

Here is your Monday STORY on: LOVE: There are too many occasions when we give up an opportunity to do a good deed. More often the emotion in existence when we decide against it is normally lethargy; 'For some reason we just can't be bothered.' This emotion of course exists either when we adopt a negative state of mind or when it causes the negativity itself. Being negative is a severe hindrance, but the emotion to nullify its effect is LOVE. The next time you pass the opportunity to do a good deed; begin to love the situation, the object and the person who needs the help and you'll trigger a positive response. Today's story is one of reality, but you'll only recognise its full potential as you grow to love it... THESE THINGS I WISH FOR We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse. For my grandchildren, I'd like better. I'd really like for them to know about hand me down clothes and homemade ice cream and leftover meat loaf sandwiches. I really would. I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty by being cheated. I hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn and wash the car. And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen. It will be good if at least one time you can see puppies born and your old dog put to sleep. I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in. I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother. And it's all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared, I hope you let him. When you want to see a movie and your little brother wants to tag along, I hope you'll let him. I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely. On rainy days, when you have to catch a ride, I hope you don't ask your driver to drop you two blocks away so you won't be seen riding with someone as uncool as your Mom. If you want a slingshot, I hope your Dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one. I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books. When you learn to use computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract in your head. I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your first crush on a girl, and when you talk back to your mother that you learn what ivory soap tastes like. May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole. I don't care if you try a beer once, but I hope you don't like it. And if a friend offers you dope or a joint, I hope you realize he is not your friend. I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your Grandpa and go fishing with your Uncle. May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during the holidays. I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through your neighbour's window and that she hugs you and kisses you at Christmas time when you give her a plaster mould of your hand. These things I wish for you - tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness. To me, it's the only way to appreciate life. (Lee Pitts) QUOTE: "I shall pass this way but once. Therefore any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show, let me do it now for I shall not pass this way again." (William Penn) [[ct]]: Metaphors For Life

What do you think of my poem? Honest critique please?
The beat of a clock the corner Ticks with a rythymic certainty For when the sun is a carcass Decomposed by the worms of the dark To be born again hail blackbird song It drones on The hands mocks me, his sound Is maddening, I must escape The hell of his glass covered face He leans down to whisper in my bleeding ears "You can't escape my darling dear." Dear God, may you let his cries Stutter to a blinding stop and may The springs and winds jumble and fall And melt away like the dust I wish To be Clock is a metaphor for life

Does yer fancy ever get tickled by just a memory?
Are ya in tune today? Thanks Y'all Don't ya just love it, and dance and sing when in a box of Cracker Jacks ya find a secret decoder ring? Maybe a simplistic metaphor for life or a good way to resolve some of our struggles and strife? I like both the Peanuts and Carmel Corn all gooey and stickin together kinda like a family, when close together. Ok just another metaphor there, maybe, kinda just like me, a half breed Native with long Red hair. Yowee, see how scattered I am? The second "together" was sposed to be, "close and warm" Yikes. Yowee Shotgun, again such sage advice, and I do appreciate and think yer bein nice. I may do a re-write, but my brain is scattered, and after notions keep me thinkin. Does it really matter? Hugs you April, and hugs you Nancy. y'all really are what tickles my fancy.
