The Pause Upon Which All Else Relies
by Leo
9 Feb 2012 at 8:56am
Post written by Leo Babauta. There is one little habit I’ve learned that has changed everything else in my life. The pause. When we fail, it’s because we act on urges without thinking, without realizing it. We have the urge to eat junk, and we do it. We have the urge to check email instead [...]
The Thousand Cuts Fitness Program
by Leo
6 Feb 2012 at 10:43am
Post written by Leo Babauta. I’ve trained for marathons, triathlons, 10Ks, a 13.5-hour challenge, Ubanathlons, and more. But my favorite fitness program isn’t one where you train for a major event. It’s where you get fit by a thousand little actions. When the actions are tiny, they are easy. You have no excuse. You can [...]

2 Feb 2012 at 9:20am
Editor’s Note: This is a guest post from Tyler Tervooren of Advanced Riskology. I used to have a lot of bad habits. I still do, but I used to have a lot more. Here?s just a small sampling: I woke up late and went to bed early. I procrastinated on my most important work. I [...]

Creating Silence from Chaos
by Leo
27 Jan 2012 at 3:20pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. We are often afraid of silence, because its emptiness feels idle, boring, unproductive, and scary. And so we fill our lives with chaos, noise, clutter. But silence can be lovely, and therapeutic, and powerful. It can be the remedy for our stress and the habits that crush us. If we [...]
The Habits That Crush Us
by Leo
23 Jan 2012 at 11:26am
‘Don’t panic.’ ~Douglas Adams Post written by Leo Babauta. Why is it that we cannot break the bad habits that stand in our way, crushing our desires to live a healthy life, be fit, simplify, be happier? How is it that our best intentions are nearly always beaten? We want to be focused and productive, [...]
Learning to Sit Alone, in a Quiet Empty Room
by Leo
17 Jan 2012 at 1:49pm
‘All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. Think about some of the problems of our daily lives, and how many of them would be eased if we could learn to sit alone, in a quiet empty room, with contentment. If [...]
Life as a Conscious Practice
by Leo
13 Jan 2012 at 9:15am
‘Everything is practice.’ ~Pele Post written by Leo Babauta. When we learn a martial art, or ballet, or gymnastics, or soccer ? we consciously practice movements in a deliberate way, repeatedly. By conscious, repeated practice, we become good at those movements. Our entire lives are like this, but we’re often less conscious of the practice. [...]

Clearing Your Life for a New Year
by Leo
9 Jan 2012 at 12:55pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. Every January, people rush out and get a gym membership, set a list of goals or resolutions, and get ready to take on a new year of frenetic activity. Unfortunately, we don’t often clear space to make room for all this new stuff. The beginning of the year is a [...]

Jobs That Make People Happy

Here is your Monday STORY on: LOVE: Love is an intense feeling of deep affection. Love can also mean an intense sexual attraction to someone. If we forget the personal feeling for a moment, how would we describe someone who shows love to the world? Perhaps a good example would be that you offer the same affection to everyone, whether a neighbour or an enemy. If you met a stranger, then you would offer the same help regardless. Of course this feeling of offering love to the world is one that many would think they readily apply each day. Like many moments of sadness a spiralling effect is created. If you are hurting, or you are suffering regular bouts of pain, your temperament is more unstable than normal; and your ability to offer love diminishes. Alternatively if you experience a few moments of selfishness, your greed to serve than mood increases and the chance of you offering any love also diminishes. Not me! Cries the reader... Unless you are very saintly, selfishness is difficult to shrug off. In some small way, each day, there is evidence of a selfish action. Forgive me for suggesting it can be eliminated, but selfishness can be weakened. To see it and understand it is half the battle. Have you ever been in a similar situation to this merchant in the next story? A HASIDIC STORY A wealthy Jewish merchant treats a poor old man with rudeness and disdain as they travel together on a train. When they arrive at their common destination, the merchant finds the station thronged with pious Jews waiting in ecstatic joy to greet the arrival of one of the holiest rabbis in Europe, and learns to his frustration that the old man in his compartment is that saintly rabbi. Embarrassed at his disgraceful behaviour and distraught that he missed a golden opportunity to speak in privacy to a wise and holy man, the merchant pushes his way through the crowd to find the old man. When he reaches him, he begs the rabbi's forgiveness and requests his blessing. The old rabbi looks at him and replies, "I cannot forgive you. To receive forgiveness you must go out and beg it from every poor old person in the world." (by: Brian Cavanaugh, T.O.R., The Sower's Seeds). QUOTE: 'Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense.' (Ralph Waldo Emerson).

A song that fits my personality?
Does any song fit my personality??? What?! I'll be 13 in 2 months and 36 days, as of today. (5/10/09) I'm the girl that says things faster than she can think. Every so often things pop out of my mouth and then I think to myself, 'that wasn't even remotely true!' If I were to die tomorrow, I would have no regrets. I believe that if something is just as bad, it's also just as good. The glass is half full. Some people think I have a stuttering problem. But I don't... I just have a lot to say and try to cram it all into a sentence before I forget. I love acting. Acting is like breathing to me, something I couldn't live without. My goal in life is to make everyone smile. Just once. I want to see faces light up when they see me... I want to make people happy. When I grow up, I want a job that makes people happy. I'm considering a career in entertainment/acting/directing, but if that doesn't work out I want to work at something for Youth Services at my church. It's pretty easy to make me laugh or smile. Once at DisneyWorld, my mom asked a worker when the park closed. The worker said the park was OPEN until 8:00pm. That made me smile. If I wanted to be a clone, I'd shop at Hollister or Aero. But nope, I shop at Forever 21 and resale shops=] I love writing songs. I can't think of a better way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon than strumming my guitar and writing a song. I'd rather have my 5 best friends than a million friends I dont know all that well. Taylor Swift is my idol. I feel like it's okay to make mistakes as long as you admit you made the mistake. If I had one wish, it'd be to fly. If I was a boy, my name would have been Jordan. Says my mom. I love watching nature. It's beautiful. I love to love.

What is a good job that makes people happy?
Okay, so I am a first yr in college, I was planning on being a dental hygienist, and then later on becoming an orthodontist. But that takes SO much school! And i am 18 wks pregnant so, i dont think I will really be able to do 6-8 yrs of full-time school. But I am willing to work hard, to get a good paying job. Well I have lately found that I really love making people happy, it gives me a great feeling inside and I love it! But I do have expensive taste, and love nice things! Any job ideas for me???

I don't know what job I want?
I'll start by saying I'm currently training to join the armed forces. But I do want another job between now and then (I plan on applying in the next few years). I want to have a job that makes people happy, I like the good feeling that I get. It's also worth mentioning that I was pulled out of school early, so as a result I haven't got any full qualifications. Being a police officer would be nice as well. Sorry if any of this was hard to understand, English isn't my first language. Thank you! Enlight of the answer from T E, I've realised I haven't mentioned that I'm now 17 years of age and I can't join a school, but college is still a viable option.
