by Leo
27 Jan 2012 at 3:20pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. We are often afraid of silence, because its emptiness feels idle, boring, unproductive, and scary. And so we fill our lives with chaos, noise, clutter. But silence can be lovely, and therapeutic, and powerful. It can be the remedy for our stress and the habits that crush us. If we [...]
The Habits That Crush Us

‘Don’t panic.’ ~Douglas Adams Post written by Leo Babauta. Why is it that we cannot break the bad habits that stand in our way, crushing our desires to live a healthy life, be fit, simplify, be happier? How is it that our best intentions are nearly always beaten? We want to be focused and productive, [...]

How to Have the Best Year of Your Life (without Setting a Single Goal)
by guest
5 Jan 2012 at 9:15am
Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Jeff Goins of Goins, Writer. This new year, do something different: stop setting goals. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results, then making resolutions for another year is a sure-fire way to drive yourself crazy. I did [...]

Inner Peace

Here is your Sunday STORY on: THE LOVE OF WISDOM: Various studies have shown that if you enjoy your work and work for joy, it has a positive effect on your health and aging. That of course is following a medical survey, but within WISDOM it is sensible to be aware that too much stress for example can cause health problems. So here we have the CAUSE and EFFECT theory. If we have a career that gives us ill-health we should seriously consider the value of that position. In other words source out the reason for the stress and try and either eliminate it or come to terms with the problem and try and reduce its impact upon your health. Today's illustration is an excerpt from a book. It explains that following a serious incident with health we can remain positive or we can allow its implications to destroy what life we have left. 'A stitch in time saves nine, ' a proverb we can use to help us with our health. If we ever have warning signals that our job is too stressful. We need to reduce the stress or eliminate it. This is WISE. In Wisdom we need to see the beauty of this statement and act. We can see the CAUSE and need to act to save our health from deteriorating. This is not some new glaring piece of news you are hearing, but a timely reminder that WISDOM travels throughout every aspect of our life. If we know what is WISE then we ought to actively apply it. Adversity can strike us all, but the fight against it must be positive. POSITIVE ACTION DURING REHABILITATION Duni Chand was a business executive in his early fifties who suffered a sudden heart attack. His cardiac evaluation and long-term prognosis were excellent. Despite the assurance that he had only a minor, uncomplicated attack and was making an excellent recovery, he simply couldn't get over the mental shock of "having a heart attack." Neither psychotherapy nor physiotherapy helped him during his rehabilitation period. He was somehow convinced that he could no longer lead an active, productive life, and he gave up all efforts in this direction. He started suffering from depression and felt he was growing old rather fast. As a matter of fact, he soon began looking much older than his age, and asked for early retirement from his job. Then there was Shyman Aunder, about the same age and holding a comparable position, who suffered a rather similar heart attack. Although his long-term prognosis wasn't quite as good as Duni Chand's, he returned to work after two months and said, "I like my job better than ever before. It may seem surprising but it is true that I work fewer hours now but achieve more. I'm no longer rushing for the deadline; somehow I just seem to plan things better. I'm more productive, and I enjoy life. I find time to relax and look around; I have time to stand and stare. I never knew the world was so beautiful." Speaking of his wife, Shyman Sunder said appreciatively, "Earlier I never took time to see her lips enrich as she smiled, or her eyes brighten as we talked." (An extract from "Your Life Is In Your Hands." By Krishan Chopra M.D.) QUOTE: "We need quite time to examine our lives openly and honestly... Spending quiet time alone gives your mind an opportunity to renew itself and create order." (Susan L. Taylor, U.S. Journalist).

Can you REALLY Count on JESUS?
YES! ?For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him SHALL NOT BE ASHAMED? (Romans 10:11). I have heard some preachers on the radio say, ?a person who is ashamed of Jesus is not saved.? This is heresy my friend?Don?t you believe that garbage for one moment. Romans 10:11 is a quote from the Old Testament... ?...he that believeth SHALL NOT MAKE HASTE? (Isaiah 28:16). In other words, whosoever believes on the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior will not be disappointed. Jesus will NOT let us down. We will not have to run in shame or hide on the Day of judgment. Jesus will make good on His promise to us. Jesus said what He meant and meant what He said, ?For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved? (Romans 10:13). What a blessed promise from God!!! So many people have foolishly misunderstood Romans 10:11. Just because a person is ashamed of Jesus does not mean they are not a Believer. Was not Peter ashamed when he denied Christ three times and cursed the name of Jesus? Were not all the disciples scared when they forsook Christ while he was being scourged and crucified? Was not Joseph of Arimathaea a secret Believer? ?And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews? (John 19:38). He feared for his life. Yes, they were all afraid and ashamed. They didn?t dare tell anyone who they were for fear of being crucified themselves. People who fear embarrassment, harassment or rejection by their co-workers, family and friends usually are reluctant to bring up the name of Jesus. It is the same type of fear as the disciples dealt with. However, does this mean they were not saved? Of course not?they were still saved! Peter didn?t lose his salvation when he cursed and denied Christ, he simply lost his inner peace. Later Peter bitterly wept and asked God to forgive him. Of course, he was instantly forgiven. God knows that we are only human, ?For HE KNOWETH OUR FRAME; HE REMEMBERETH THAT WE ARE DUST? (Psalm 103:14). What a wonderful truth!!! God never forgets that I am made of the dust of the earth, He is patient and longsuffering. He knows me better than I could possibly ever know myself. How foolish it would be for me or anyone else not to trust God wholeheartedly. If God is longsuffering with the unsaved, how much more is He patient with His own??very much so. Do you see my friend? We are not able to live perfect as long as we dwell in this earthly tent (body). We will always be at war with the sinful flesh. Every Believer has three primary enemies: Satan, the world and the flesh. We can only defeat these enemies in the power of God?s Holy Spirit. We must pray and ask God to keep us from temptation. But when we do fall, we must understand that we are only human beings incapable of being perfect. The key is to identify our weaknesses and focus our Bible study and prayer in those areas. On the contrary, this certainly does not give us God's permission to sin. We are to strive to be perfect while at the same time realizing that we will never be perfect in this life. Someone put it this way, ?Do your best and put the rest into God?s hands.? Surely, it is a sin for us to disobey the leading of the Holy Spirit; however, we are sinners and will falter at times. This is the great dilemma in the Believer?s life, ?For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do? (Romans 7:19). These were the words of the mighty Apostle Paul, the great defender of the faith. He doesn?t sound too much in control does he? He says he?s prone to do the opposite of what he wants to do. Sound familiar? If you?re a Believer it should. Listen to Paul again in Romans 7:24, ?O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?? Paul doesn?t sound too confident does he? Compare this to the health, wealth and prosperity preachers that have infected our TV and radio channels everywhere. Paul asks the question, ?who shall deliver me?? The Apostle Paul answers his own question in Romans 7:25, ?I thank God THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD. So then with the mind I myself serve the Law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.? This is a life-long battle and only Jesus can deliver us from our self. Jesus said, ?...the flesh is weak? (Matthew 26:41). We must not forget this. In conclusion, it is silly for anyone to say that a person is not truly saved simply because they may sin or deny the Lord at a particular moment or time in their life. John the Baptist became so discouraged while in prison that he sent his disciples to ask Jesus if He were really the Christ. Matthew 11:2,3, ?Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?? http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/how_to_be_saved.html

Do your inner demons fool you into thinking meditation and being at peace are uncomfortable?
A few months ago, I decided to take up meditation. I was living with really high anxiety, depression, and bi-polar emotions. I knew my mind wasn't a stable place which is the reason I started. But even when I did, I felt really weird doing meditation. It's as though my emotions are against the very idea, some force inside me tells me it doesn't want to live a life of inner peace, but at the same time I really want it myself. Meditation was helpful, but it exposed me to a lot of dark feelings inside me. It was so overwhelming I deciding to quit and never attempt it again. But now I'm helpless as ever, and I'm beginning to wonder if the dark feelings are fooling me into thinking mediation is evil and the only thing evil were the feelings themselves and them telling me a life of peace is not worth living. I'm deciding to try again because I heard sometimes it does get worse before it gets better and I'm ready to brave it. Do you think it's true that neurotic feelings fool you into despising a peaceful life while you yourself want it at the same time?
