How to Fail at Habits
by Leo
24 Apr 2012 at 11:28am
Post written by Leo Babauta. Before I learned how to change habits, I was stuck. How To Be Happy With What You Have

Here is your Tuesday STORY on: SELF DEVELOPMENT Half the battle is to understand... If we know we can self develop, then the big question is, why don't we? The answer to that would normally consist of excuse after excuse; on the lines of, not enough time, too busy, I lead an active schedule and I can never find the time. So... if half the battle is to understand then a further quarter is to schedule your time. Time seems to drift by too fast and we can never get anything done. I would suggest we waste our time rather than not manage it properly; but that is not the issue at the moment. We can all have good intentions but unless we use our time efficiently we'll never make any actions. In not making actions we don't self develop. Today's story illustrates the crazy world we live in and what we allow to happen. THE PARADOX OF OUR TIME We have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints; we spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less. We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; we have more degrees, but less common sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness. We spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too seldom, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom and lie too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life; we've added years to life, not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbour. We've conquered outer space, but not inner space; we've done larger things, but not better things; we've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul; we've split the atom, but not our prejudice; we write more, but learn less; plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait; we have higher incomes, but lower morals; more food but less appeasement; more acquaintances, but fewer friends; more effort but less success. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but have less communication; we've become long on quantity, but short on quality. These are the time of fast foods and slow digestion; tall men and short character; steep profits, and shallow relationships. These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare; more leisure and less fun; more kinds of food, but less nutrition. These are days of two incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one-night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the show window, and nothing in the stockroom. How to be happy with what you have? (Answers: 7) (Comments: 0)
I'm 27 year old male. Whole my life I suffered from depression and there seems to be nothing that helps. Antidepressants only makes me feel much worse. I really don't have anyone to talk to about this. Few years ago I thought that my life has changed for better. I met this girl and we were in love for several years. Finally she left me for another man. I guess I was too much of a burden. In a way that was a good thing that she left because I was holding her back and now I understand that I can never find true love. How do you people who have depression stay positive and happy with what you have? I do appreciate lot of things.. my friends, parents, brother, job, apartment, car, health (except this depression), etc. So it's not like I don't try to overcome this. I know this is in my genes. My grandmother had schizophrenia and my mother has depression. I'm just so tired of all this. I know that everyone has difficult times but my life life has been uphill battle for the most of my life. I don't feel sorry for myself. I just want to get better. If someone just knew how to cure this. We broke up over a year ago and that is not an issue here. I brought it up because that relationship was the happiest time of my life. The weird thing is that my life is not really that bad. I just can't feel happy even if I try and I do try to be happy all the time. I guess the main problem is that I don't have anyone to talk to who understands what I'm going through. Can't afford therapy either. Tomcat, I really believe you are onto something. I have always felt depressed but after trying antidepressants last year, I have felt much worse. But how do I cure this if doctors can't help me?

A long time ago I was used to having one gaming system: The Nintendo 64. It was the only system I cared about. Lately I've been pressured into buying all three of the current gen systems. I love everything about Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. They all make good games and good systems that I love to play, and it is hard to settle down with one console and ignoring the other consoles. Buying all three consoles and games for each of the consoles is going to be a lot of money. So how can I be happy with what I have in order to save some money? oh and I have a Playstation 3 and a Wii already..
