Editor’s Note: This is a guest post from Tyler Tervooren of Advanced Riskology. I used to have a lot of bad habits. I still do, but I used to have a lot more. Here?s just a small sampling: I woke up late and went to bed early. I procrastinated on my most important work. I [...]

Creating Silence from Chaos
by Leo
27 Jan 2012 at 3:20pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. We are often afraid of silence, because its emptiness feels idle, boring, unproductive, and scary. And so we fill our lives with chaos, noise, clutter. But silence can be lovely, and therapeutic, and powerful. It can be the remedy for our stress and the habits that crush us. If we [...]
The Habits That Crush Us
by Leo
23 Jan 2012 at 11:26am
‘Don’t panic.’ ~Douglas Adams Post written by Leo Babauta. Why is it that we cannot break the bad habits that stand in our way, crushing our desires to live a healthy life, be fit, simplify, be happier? How is it that our best intentions are nearly always beaten? We want to be focused and productive, [...]
Learning to Sit Alone, in a Quiet Empty Room

‘All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. Think about some of the problems of our daily lives, and how many of them would be eased if we could learn to sit alone, in a quiet empty room, with contentment. If [...]
Life as a Conscious Practice

‘Everything is practice.’ ~Pele Post written by Leo Babauta. When we learn a martial art, or ballet, or gymnastics, or soccer ? we consciously practice movements in a deliberate way, repeatedly. By conscious, repeated practice, we become good at those movements. Our entire lives are like this, but we’re often less conscious of the practice. [...]

Clearing Your Life for a New Year

9 Jan 2012 at 12:55pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. Every January, people rush out and get a gym membership, set a list of goals or resolutions, and get ready to take on a new year of frenetic activity. Unfortunately, we don’t often clear space to make room for all this new stuff. The beginning of the year is a [...]

How to Have the Best Year of Your Life (without Setting a Single Goal)
by guest
5 Jan 2012 at 9:15am
Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Jeff Goins of Goins, Writer. This new year, do something different: stop setting goals. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results, then making resolutions for another year is a sure-fire way to drive yourself crazy. I did [...]

Here is your Tuesday STORY on: SELF DEVELOPMENT: The same way use of self development is found in both motivation and self esteem, and that is to plan using small and achievable goals. If you have an absence of goals, you have an absence of self development. To remind you we are not talking about huge goals but small achievable ones. QUOTE: 'Look for more and more things in every day to appreciate. Then watch your life in the days and weeks ahead blossom before you.' (Eva). As with any goal planning, they needed to be routed using fundamental principles. Doing this ensures that you are creating positive actions. Today's story examines the benefits of being routed with sound principles. FREEDOM TO SOAR One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Multicoloured creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds darting and dancing in the heady atmosphere above the earth. As the strong winds gusted against the kites, a string kept them in check. Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining string and the cumbersome tail kept them in tow, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say, "Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!" They soared beautifully even as they fought the imposed restriction of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose. "Freedom at last" it seemed to say. "Freedom to fly with the wind." Yet freedom from restraint simply put it at the mercy of an unsympathetic breeze. It fluttered ungracefully to the ground and landed in a tangled mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. "Freedom at last, " freedom to lie powerless in the dirt, to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to lodge lifeless against the first obstruction. How much like kites we sometimes are. The Lord gives us adversity and restrictions, rules to follow from which we can grow and gain strength. Restraint is a necessary counterpart to the winds of opposition. Some of us tug at the rules so hard that we never soar to reach the heights we might have obtained. We keep part of the commandment and (pardon the pun) never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground. Let us each rise to the great heights our Heavenly Father has in store for us, recognizing that some of the restraints that we may chafe under are actually the steadying force that helps us ascend and achieve. (Lessons From Life, Chapter 12 - Free To Soar - Wayne B. Lynn) QUOTE: 'In absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia. (Unknown Author).

I am always sad for some reasons and then sometimes no reason at all.?
I have always been a happy child i guess you could say. Until a couple years ago when i just started to hate everyone and everything. not wanting to be with anyone. and always on the computer. i think sometimes to much on the computer. But my mum and I have never really gotten along since i was born honestly. And im worried that i'll never have that connection with her. Like i see daughters with their mums and their bestfriends but then you see me and my mum and we dont look at eachother we dont talk or listen to eachother. and it makes me really sad to talk about me and my mum since were not that close.I am the oldest child out of 4 but one of my brothers died ( he was a triplet). and i always cry for no reason at all weather im at home or school, i just break down. And then a couple weeks ago. i tried to kill myself by taking panadol ( stupid i know ) and i was just so over everyone and i just wanted to leave i was that over everything. I dont want to be sad anymore. but i dont know how to stop being sad?

My 5 year old has major mood swings?
My 5 yr old is normally a very happy child, then something will set her off and she either gets so made that she throws a tantrum or she get so mad that she goes in to a "shell" where she wont respond to anyone or anything. It takes awhile to get her out of the "shell" but when its over, she doesn't even remember it happened. What could this be?

What do you think of the beginning of my book so far?
Hey! I've been working on this all day (with breaks, of course!) and wanted to know what I can improve? Any CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is accepted, but if you're gonna be mean and a total bitch, please don't bother. Oh, and please don't mind grammar or small mistakes, those will be edited later! Thanks in advance :) ?Shit!? The crash of the copier exploded throughout the Police Department. Adam flinched at his mother?s frustrated voice. He hated it when she grew frustrated because it meant she would be in the worst mood. He paused and waited for about five seconds to pass before sticking his head out of his father?s office. ?Ma? Everything okay?? Adam called out. ?What? Ugh, yeah, every thing's just fine.? Cathleen Haynes called sarcastically to her son. Adam heard the hint of sarcasm, and he didn?t appreciate it. Although he loved his mother dearly, he couldn?t help but get irritated when she gave everybody an attitude. Adam rolled his eyes and left his father?s office to tend to his mother. He was shocked to find the scene before him in the copy room. The copier was printing out blank page after blank page, leaving the whole floor to be covered with papers. The ink capsule had exploded in the machine, causing the wall, floor and surrounding objects to be stained with blackness. Amongst the disastrous mess sat his mother, defeated and exhausted. Her natural platinum blond hair had fallen out of it?s neat bun and her beige blouse and white skirt was stained with ink. ?Ma, it?s only five o?clock in the morning! How could you have done this?? Adam cried out, quickly moving forward to help Cathleen. ?I have no idea what happened! I came in to copy this file for Michael and when I pressed the button for 3 copies, it made this weird hissing sound and the papers just began to fly out. The the ink thingy blew up and here?s this ugly mess! Oh Adam, your father won?t let me keep working here if he sees this.? Cathleen explained. The only reason why she kept coming back was to keep an eye on her husband of 20 years. Once, when the couple was very young, when Adam was only 2 years old, Michael Hayes had had a small affair with his secretary. Although it didn?t last for long, and out of guilt, he came clean, Cathleen had taken the secretary position to prevent it from happening again. She hadn?t wanted to divorce him for one of two reasons. One was because of their son. What kind of a home would it have been if his parents were divorced? She had always thought. She knew of very happy children with divorced parents, but she wanted Adam to grow up in a home with both his parents intact. And two, she was a devout Christian, therefore divorce was not an option. ?I?ll see what I can do. Go home and change, you look awful.? Cathleen narrowed her eyes at her son. ?Thanks.? She grumbled. What a woman. She always managed to get into trouble at the office. Adam set to work at picking up the papers and getting rid of as much ink as he possibly could. ?This is ridiculous.? Adam muttered. ?Your mother again?? Adam turned around to find his father, Chief Michael Hayes. ?Hm, yeah. Just sent her home to clean up. She didn?t exactly want you finding out.? ?I see. Well, things happen. Just try to clean it as best you can. I got a junkie in the temp. cells. Her daughter?s coming over to bail her out. What a shame, such a waste. Her husband?s the richest man around, too. Probably spends it all on drugs.? Michael informed his son. He tried to keep Adam updated on pretty much most of his cases. ?What are the charges?? Adam was interested. After all, he was planning on being a police officer after college. He was only sixteen, but since he was five he had wanted to be like his father. Usually, most children forget about their dreams of being cops or firefighters, but not Adam. He had a passion for the law and abiding it. It was almost like his religion, although his mother hated it when he said that. ?Assault. She attacked a bartender at a bar for refusing to serve her anymore. Her alcohol level was far over the limit. We took her into custody and called her home. Her daughter should be here shortly. If you want you can tag along, see how we handle bail.? ?Thanks, but I can?t. I?m supposed to get the guys coffee.? The Police Department had a coffee maker, but it was almost never cleaned out, so the coffee tasted disgusting. Cathleen had tried to keep it in shape, but the guys had wrecked it, so they found it easier to send Adam out, whenever he was there, down the street to get coffee. ?Got it. I?ll see you in a bit.? Michael left the copy room. Adam soon followed once things looked somewhat decent again. Once, in the lobby, Adam felt revived. He loved the bustle and bustle of the Police Department. Files being passed from hand to hand, people yelling at each other, and the no-good lowlifes of the town all gathered in one place. He took a deep breath and went to his mother?s desk. Cathleen was one clean person, but her desk was an absolute mess. Files were stacked unevenly, old plastic cups and unwashed coffee mugs littered the desk, meaningless papers were scattered. You couldn?t even see the surface of the desk! ?Excuse me! Hey, umm hello? Dude!? Adam looked up to find a young, washed-out looking girl. ?Ugh, finally!? ?Can I help you?? Adam asked. Who was this girl, and what was her problem? She had large, round sunglasses with dark lenses, although it was dark outside, considering it was five in the morning. Her bleached blond hair was in a messy bun at the top of her head and she was still wearing her pajamas. ?Yeah, I?m here to bail out my bitch of a mother.? The girl said, st staring at Adam blankly. ?Excuse me?? Adam was surprised. ?You heard me. Where?s my mother? I?ve got your damn money, now bring me to her. I bet she?s drunk out of her mind and guess who has to take care of her when her poor head is aching in the morning?? ?Uhm... sure. Let me, uhm, just get those papers. You can fill them out and I?ll get my father. He?ll bring your mother.? Adam handed her a clipboard with the forms and went to get his father. Never had he seen such a girl act like that. She must really hate her mother, he thought. Omg, I never meant for it to offend anybody. I totally get it, and I don't believe in that at all, but it's my character. She's very religious and can judgmental, I will definitely re-word it to avoid this again. Thanks for your input though!!! :)
