The Pause Upon Which All Else Relies
by Leo
9 Feb 2012 at 8:56am
Post written by Leo Babauta. There is one little habit I’ve learned that has changed everything else in my life. The pause. When we fail, it’s because we act on urges without thinking, without realizing it. We have the urge to eat junk, and we do it. We have the urge to check email instead [...]
The Thousand Cuts Fitness Program

6 Feb 2012 at 10:43am
Post written by Leo Babauta. I’ve trained for marathons, triathlons, 10Ks, a 13.5-hour challenge, Ubanathlons, and more. But my favorite fitness program isn’t one where you train for a major event. It’s where you get fit by a thousand little actions. When the actions are tiny, they are easy. You have no excuse. You can [...]

Creating Silence from Chaos
by Leo
27 Jan 2012 at 3:20pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. We are often afraid of silence, because its emptiness feels idle, boring, unproductive, and scary. And so we fill our lives with chaos, noise, clutter. But silence can be lovely, and therapeutic, and powerful. It can be the remedy for our stress and the habits that crush us. If we [...]
The Habits That Crush Us

‘Don’t panic.’ ~Douglas Adams Post written by Leo Babauta. Why is it that we cannot break the bad habits that stand in our way, crushing our desires to live a healthy life, be fit, simplify, be happier? How is it that our best intentions are nearly always beaten? We want to be focused and productive, [...]

‘All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. Think about some of the problems of our daily lives, and how many of them would be eased if we could learn to sit alone, in a quiet empty room, with contentment. If [...]
Life as a Conscious Practice

‘Everything is practice.’ ~Pele Post written by Leo Babauta. When we learn a martial art, or ballet, or gymnastics, or soccer ? we consciously practice movements in a deliberate way, repeatedly. By conscious, repeated practice, we become good at those movements. Our entire lives are like this, but we’re often less conscious of the practice. [...]

Clearing Your Life for a New Year

Post written by Leo Babauta. Every January, people rush out and get a gym membership, set a list of goals or resolutions, and get ready to take on a new year of frenetic activity. Unfortunately, we don’t often clear space to make room for all this new stuff. The beginning of the year is a [...]

Happiest Country In The World

Here is your Sunday STORY on: THE LOVE OF WISDOM: Within a life you're trying to improve, you need to have events that give you an impulse to do the right thing; you need to create a trigger that reminds you not to go down the wrong path. Wisdom is nothing more than a reminder to do the right thing. If you find a need to justify your actions, then here if we chose to search is an element of incorrect decision making. When you make a decision and you know its right, there is a sense of oneness. No one person will need an explanation of why you did it this way, it will be obvious. If you study wisdom and philosophy then you should be the prime case in point of 'Leading By Example'. However, we cannot deny that there is a road to travel before we can expect this to happen. It is here, at the beginning of the road that we need to instigate reminders to continue to guide us. Triggers that will make us think we're not using our knowledge of wisdom to its fullest. Today's story has one of those triggers set in place. Albeit that the trigger is not correcting a faltering path, but reminding that a witness is approving your benevolence. THE VALUE OF A PENNY This one will make you think... Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband was invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the water-way, and cars costing more than her house. The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely. As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up? Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She causally mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some valuable. A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this? "Look at it." He said. "Read what it says." She read the words "United States of America." "No, not that; read further." "One cent?" "No, keep reading." "In God we Trust?" "Yes!" "And?" "And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him! Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust is in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me, lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!" When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the word, "In God We Trust, " and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message. It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful... And God is patient... Why are Socialist countries the happiest in the world?
I remember watching a program where Oprah Winfrey visited the happiest country in the world, Denmark. Which is an officially Socialist country. Along with the top three happiest countries in the world according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands. (Each of them has a socialist government) "Well, they're happy because they feel safe... They feel a sense of security, they don't have to worry about healthcare, they don't have to worry if they get old and there's nobody to take care of them, they don't have to worry if they're going to lose their jobs, or lose their homes, they don't have to worry about educating their children, they don't have to worry if they get sick they won't have anybody to take care of them. Its definately a sense of security, comfort and cosyness. And it makes you really happy". - Oprah Of course she didn't mention they were socialist, because you can't say the s word on american tv. "You forgot to explain how this organization is able to MEASURE happiness. Please tell us, that's very interesting." Well obviously they would take surveys in different countries on how happy the inhabitants are. "kid,,one thing is to "visit" the other thing is to "LIVE in IT"!!!!!! and socialist countries have high unemployment and stagnant economies...I know I lived in 2 Cuba (first 14 years) and Italy (2 Years) and my experience was people were dying to come here to the USA...ok! so stop buying the bullcrap the liberal media puts out! no wonder MILLIONS want to come...here! jesss.. you kids are so brainwashed...lol..it is actually funny!" Well, I live in a country under a Socialist Government (Australia). Our economy did not suffer a financial recession, ours moved forward 1% whilst America went backwards 2%. Stagnant economy? Atleast ours didn't go backwards? And, I don't want to live in the USA. It would be nice to visit, but definately not live.

Why is the happiest country in the world, An atheist country?
So Oprah visits the happiest country in the world Denmark, to find out why they're so happy? Denmark is run under a Socialist government, its one of the most wealthiest countries in the world. It's a country with a very low income inequality, and very high taxes and greater distribution of funds. I live in Australia, which is run under the Australian Labor Party, which is apart of the International Socialist Alliance. But It's not AS socialist as Denmark. I wish it was. Anyways, so she seemed rather puzzled by why none of them believe in god? And so Oprah asked the group of Danish woman "So, do you believe in God?" and they're all "no, not at all. no". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOSIY0xhfeE&feature=related Why do you think the happiest country in the world (by surveys of inhabitants) is Denmark? Is it because they're Socialists or is it because they're Atheists? Or a mix? "AH, if I went to the pub near where you live and asked do you believe in God, I think all would say NO! Depends where you are, who you ask. Try a nationwide survey!" Here you are: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_atheism#Europe 31% of the population believes in god.
