Creating Silence from Chaos
by Leo
27 Jan 2012 at 3:20pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. We are often afraid of silence, because its emptiness feels idle, boring, unproductive, and scary. And so we fill our lives with chaos, noise, clutter. But silence can be lovely, and therapeutic, and powerful. It can be the remedy for our stress and the habits that crush us. If we [...]
The Habits That Crush Us
by Leo
23 Jan 2012 at 11:26am
‘Don’t panic.’ ~Douglas Adams Post written by Leo Babauta. Why is it that we cannot break the bad habits that stand in our way, crushing our desires to live a healthy life, be fit, simplify, be happier? How is it that our best intentions are nearly always beaten? We want to be focused and productive, [...]

by Leo

‘All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. Think about some of the problems of our daily lives, and how many of them would be eased if we could learn to sit alone, in a quiet empty room, with contentment. If [...]
Life as a Conscious Practice

‘Everything is practice.’ ~Pele Post written by Leo Babauta. When we learn a martial art, or ballet, or gymnastics, or soccer ? we consciously practice movements in a deliberate way, repeatedly. By conscious, repeated practice, we become good at those movements. Our entire lives are like this, but we’re often less conscious of the practice. [...]

Clearing Your Life for a New Year
by Leo
9 Jan 2012 at 12:55pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. Every January, people rush out and get a gym membership, set a list of goals or resolutions, and get ready to take on a new year of frenetic activity. Unfortunately, we don’t often clear space to make room for all this new stuff. The beginning of the year is a [...]

Post written by Leo Babauta. So you’ve been putting off tackling your clutter for months, maybe even years. Papers pile up on a counter, shelves are crammed full of books and magazines and other things, closets are stuffed to the point of spillage, clothes pile up on the floor or furniture, boxes and furniture and [...]
How to Have the Best Year of Your Life (without Setting a Single Goal)
by guest
5 Jan 2012 at 9:15am
Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Jeff Goins of Goins, Writer. This new year, do something different: stop setting goals. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results, then making resolutions for another year is a sure-fire way to drive yourself crazy. I did [...]

Here is your Monday STORY on: LOVE: The extent to which we GIVE to a person is the extent to which we feel them giving love to us. If we are not totally giving, we will not be open enough to receive what they are giving back to us. In this recognition is the very quality of receiving. We get to receive the very gift or feeling that we give. How often is one kiss enough? Imagine a five or six year old when you give them a loving kiss. It is only a moment later that they give you one back. Most adults are aware of the principle 'to give is to receive, ' but many will have not practiced it too often. To practice and receive the benefits will allow you to practice the principle more frequently. Whichever way that you choose to operate your life, there will be areas you have never tried and tested. Let me explain with a story. A story about understanding! If you are not willing to understand a new principle, belief or fundamental piece of knowledge, then you will never experience its delights... THE FISH AND THE TURTLE Once upon a time there was a fish. And just because it was a fish, it had lived all its life in the water and knew nothing whatever about anything else but water. And one day as it swam about in the lake where all its days had been spent, it happened to meet a turtle of its acquaintance who had just come back from a little excursion on the land. "Good day, Mr. Turtle!" said the fish. "I have not seen you for a long time. Where have you been?" "Oh", said the turtle, "I have just been for a trip on dry land." "On dry land!" exclaimed the fish. "What do you mean by on dry land? There is no dry land. I had never seen such a thing. Dry land is nothing." "Well, " said the turtle good-naturedly. "If you want to think so, of course you may; there is no one who can hinder you. But that's where I've been, all the same." "Oh, come, " said the fish. "Try to talk sense. Just tell me now what is this land of yours like? Is it all wet?" "No, it is not wet, " said the turtle. "Is it nice and fresh and cool?" asked the fish. "No, it is not nice and fresh and cool, " the turtle replied. "Is it clear so that light can come through it?" "No, it is not clear. Light cannot come through it." "Is it soft and yielding, so that I can move my fins about in it and push my nose through it?" "No, it is not soft and yielding. You could not swim in it." "Does it move or flow in streams?" "No, it neither moves nor flows in streams." "Does it ever rise up into waves then, with white foams in them?" asked the fish, impatient at this string of No's. "No!" replied the turtle, truthfully. "It never rises up into waves that I have seen." "There now, " exclaimed the fish triumphantly. "Didn't I tell you that this land of yours was just nothing? I have just asked, and you have answered me that it is neither wet nor cool, not clear nor soft and that it does not flow in streams nor rise up into waves. And if it isn't a single one of these things what else is it but nothing? Don't tell me." "Well, well", said the turtle, "If you are determined to think that dry land is nothing, I suppose you must just go on thinking so. But any one who knows what is water and what is land would say you were just a silly fish, for you think that anything you have never known is nothing just because you have never known it." And with that the turtle turned away and, leaving the fish behind in its little pond of water, set out on another excursion over the dry land that was nothing. Why are devout believers in the faith called astrology so resist to any amount of skepticism?
It is a very healthy part of living - to doubt. It means you are capable, and possess the ability to seek and discover truths about the universe. It means you will set aside your psychological crutch in order to seek reality to become more aware, resulting in personal growth in one's character. Skepticism is healthy. Having a zealous attitude towards an irrational faith like astrology is not unhealthy. It also means you are mature and are able to use critical thinking, Instead of accepting things blindly and reverting back to childhood behavior by blaming the universe for everything wrong in your life. To have doubt means you need more evidence and once evidence is provided you will believe. What is the explanation behind the resistance of doubting? Do you doubt? What do you doubt? Do you think it's wrong to doubt? Aspicoo, hello this is the fourth time I have asked - How does Astrology work? You still will not elaborate although saying you would it one asks. Cutiepie, being skeptical doesn't necessarily mean you do not belief.

Christians, do you think my views are Orthodox.....................?
Orthodox in the sense that they are aligned with mainstream Christianity both historically and now. I have divided it up into what i believe concerning doctrinal issues, and social issues because both are important i think Doctrinal issues: -I believe in the Trinity(As laid out in the Nicea Creed, and the way the Church Fathers laid it out, as well as in the Gospel of Matthew chp 28:17-20) -I believe in the Hypostatic Union -I Believe in the Virgin Birth -I Believe in his Cruxifition and descent into death(Harrowing of 'Hell') -I Believe in the Resurrection of Jesus -I Believe in the Second Coming of Jesus -I Believe in the Day of Judgement -I Believe in Heaven and Hell -I Believe in the Inerrancy of the Bible -I Believe in Salvation through faith alone -I Believe in Sola Scriptura -In terms of the Atonement of Christ i take the Arminian view(Free will is necessary for faith) -In terms of the Age of the earth, i am more in line with the Theistic Evolution side -In terms of Canon of Scripture, I believe there are 66 -I believe sex is reserved for marriage Social Issues: -I oppose Abortion -I oppose Euthanasia -I oppose the Death Penalty -I oppose Human Stem Cell Research -I Do believe Gay marriage shouldn't be illegal(because if we where to say it should be illegal because its a sin, we'd have to make other things like adultery and lying illegal as well) -I do believe prayer should be allowed in schools -I believe in Separation of Church and State in that i dont believe in Theocracy -I oppose torture -I generally support non-violence, but not absolute pacifism -I believe strongly in helping the poor What is your assessment of my doctrinal and social positions? @Madayas, I did say that i believed in helping the poor. And yes, i do believe God is compassion. Thats why he sent his son to die for us. I only wanted to see other people's perspectives on my theological position. But good point @Joshua, i dont mean Orthodox like "Eastern Orthodox" or any denomination. Orthodox in terms of mainstream Christianity and the way the Church has expounded its theology. Im a Baptist by the way..........
