The Little Guide to Contentedness
by Leo

‘He who is contented is rich.’ ~Lao Tzu Post written by Leo Babauta. There has been little in my life that has made as much an impact as learning to be content — with my life, where I am, what I’m doing, what I have, who I’m with, who I am. This little trick changes [...]

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Matt Madeiro of Make Every Day Count. Let?s see if this rings any bells. When the clock hits 8, I sit. I plop back in my rolling chair, crack open the laptop on my desk, and spend the next nine hours with my butt glued firmly to [...]

‘Distraction is the only thing that consoles us for miseries and yet it is itself the greatest of our miseries.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. ‘Begin at once to live, and count each separate day as a separate life.’ ~Seneca Post written by Leo Babauta. I’m not a rich man, nor do I fly around the world and drink champagne with famous people in exotic locales, nor do I own a sports car or SUV or a yacht. And yet, [...]

‘We learn more by looking for the answer to a question and not finding it than we do from learning the answer itself.’ ~Lloyd Alexander Post written by Leo Babauta. I am a teacher and an avid learner, and I’m passionate about both. I’m a teacher because I help Eva homeschool our kids — OK, [...]

Post written by Leo Babauta. Today (April 30) is my 39th Un-un-birthday, and as usual, the day is a good day to pause and reflect. Last year I wrote 38 Life Lessons I?ve Learned in 38 Years, and people seemed to find some use in it. This year, I thought I’d share an additional lesson [...]
How to Fail at Habits
by Leo
24 Apr 2012 at 11:28am
Post written by Leo Babauta. Before I learned how to change habits, I was stuck. I kept trying to change various habits — running, eating healthier, waking earlier, getting out of debt, ending procrastination — and I kept failing. I got very good at failing, in fact. Looking back on those days, given the power [...]

Why We Overplan
by Leo
17 Apr 2012 at 8:40am
‘A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.’ ~Lao Tzu Post written by Leo Babauta. There is something about my mind, and many people’s minds, that is overly optimistic. We think we can do so much each day, and so we overplan. We fill our plans with so much, confident [...]

Depression Children

Here is your Monday STORY on: LOVE: There are too many occasions when we give up an opportunity to do a good deed. More often the emotion in existence when we decide against it is normally lethargy; 'For some reason we just can't be bothered.' This emotion of course exists either when we adopt a negative state of mind or when it causes the negativity itself. Being negative is a severe hindrance, but the emotion to nullify its effect is LOVE. The next time you pass the opportunity to do a good deed; begin to love the situation, the object and the person who needs the help and you'll trigger a positive response. Today's story is one of reality, but you'll only recognise its full potential as you grow to love it... THESE THINGS I WISH FOR We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse. For my grandchildren, I'd like better. I'd really like for them to know about hand me down clothes and homemade ice cream and leftover meat loaf sandwiches. I really would. I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty by being cheated. I hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn and wash the car. And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen. It will be good if at least one time you can see puppies born and your old dog put to sleep. I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in. I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother. And it's all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared, I hope you let him. When you want to see a movie and your little brother wants to tag along, I hope you'll let him. I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely. On rainy days, when you have to catch a ride, I hope you don't ask your driver to drop you two blocks away so you won't be seen riding with someone as uncool as your Mom. If you want a slingshot, I hope your Dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one. I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books. When you learn to use computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract in your head. I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your first crush on a girl, and when you talk back to your mother that you learn what ivory soap tastes like. May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole. I don't care if you try a beer once, but I hope you don't like it. And if a friend offers you dope or a joint, I hope you realize he is not your friend. I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your Grandpa and go fishing with your Uncle. May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during the holidays. I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through your neighbour's window and that she hugs you and kisses you at Christmas time when you give her a plaster mould of your hand. These things I wish for you - tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness. To me, it's the only way to appreciate life. (Lee Pitts) QUOTE: "I shall pass this way but once. Therefore any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show, let me do it now for I shall not pass this way again." (William Penn) [[ct]]: Depression Children

To all the parents out there, do you regret having children? Honestly?
Please, don't be offended. I'm just curious. At 21, I'm not a parent and don't plan on becoming one anytime soon. But much too often I see parents who can't seem to relate to their children in a way that is not angry, domineering or worrisome. And I can't help but wonder if those people don't really want to be parents. Most children are unplanned, so I think at least some parents view their children as a monkey wrench thrown into their freedom filled youth. There's also post partum depression, child abuse, neglect and a whole host of other things that make me question whether all parents truly want their children. And I would feel so guilty if I became one of those parents who didn't.

Please state your opinion (Catholic)?
This is meant for people to learn off each other and not take stabs at each other. Did you ever notice how the headlines in this world today come out right at the same time that a major sin takes place? (These are not the exact quoted headlines) Example: Gay marriages legalized in California California wildfires out of control Woman in Florida taken off life support Hurricane strikes Florida Abortion supporters fight for their rights 100 killed, 30 injured in car bomb Birth Control hits the counters for teens Economy near a depression Child porn videos released on the internet 2008 the record year for tornadoes China accused of causing lead poisoning in kids Massive earthquake strikes China These are just a few of the filthy things that are happening... It's time for change... I noticed most of you didn't understand the point of this, which proves my point completely. You are right that dirty videos and natural disasters have nothing connected together by man's standards (but remember I asked for Catholics to answer this). I would've added that the headlines are not all directly related, but I didn't have any more room for words on the question. I apologize for that. Some of you must have been realizing the same kind of situations but maybe in different ways. I was once a very bad person because I was in a rebel stage of my life (like the person who mentioned George Bush and hot dogs). This was not meant to take stabs at anyone but when you ridicule something as serious as this, you cannot get a pat on the back. For people that saw the point of this posting, remember that making every first Saturday mass (of the month) will promise us mercy. Praying the rosary and praying to Our Lady and St. Jude will lift us out of the hole that we dug for ourselves. Thanks

C&A : An anime/manga that addresses serious life problems?
I was watching Shigofumi and it wasn't the best anime I've ever watched, however I found it interesting it addressed some sensitive topics that most shows shy away from because they are so dark. It effectively dealt with topics like, suicide, depression, child abuse, bullying, social anxiety, death, illness and so forth. I was trying to find if there are any other anime or manga that address such serious life themes (realistically preferably)? (even if it's just one theme or many, either is fine :) ) I've watched anime with some of the themes in already such as; Shinigami No Ballad, Ef ~A Tale of Memories/Melodies~, Sola, Bokurano, Neon Genesis Evangelion, RahXephon, Air, Higurashi No Naku, Elfen Lied, Hanbun No Tsuki Ga Noboru Sora, Jigoku Shoujo, Serial Experiments Lain, Myself;Yourself, Texhnolyze, Red Garden are just some I can think of :) Thankyou :) (this rec. question must seem a bit wierd -___-"""") I've watched Welcome to the NHK, and watched AND read Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and NANA ;) Hmm... Maybe this would resolve probs ;D Anime list : http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Krystal Manga list : http://myanimelist.net/mangalist/Krystal :) Sorry I should have put it up earlier!
