Creating Silence from Chaos
by Leo
27 Jan 2012 at 3:20pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. We are often afraid of silence, because its emptiness feels idle, boring, unproductive, and scary. And so we fill our lives with chaos, noise, clutter. But silence can be lovely, and therapeutic, and powerful. It can be the remedy for our stress and the habits that crush us. If we [...]
The Habits That Crush Us
by Leo
23 Jan 2012 at 11:26am
‘Don’t panic.’ ~Douglas Adams Post written by Leo Babauta. Why is it that we cannot break the bad habits that stand in our way, crushing our desires to live a healthy life, be fit, simplify, be happier? How is it that our best intentions are nearly always beaten? We want to be focused and productive, [...]
Learning to Sit Alone, in a Quiet Empty Room
by Leo
17 Jan 2012 at 1:49pm
‘All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. Think about some of the problems of our daily lives, and how many of them would be eased if we could learn to sit alone, in a quiet empty room, with contentment. If [...]
Life as a Conscious Practice

‘Everything is practice.’ ~Pele Post written by Leo Babauta. When we learn a martial art, or ballet, or gymnastics, or soccer ? we consciously practice movements in a deliberate way, repeatedly. By conscious, repeated practice, we become good at those movements. Our entire lives are like this, but we’re often less conscious of the practice. [...]

Clearing Your Life for a New Year
by Leo
9 Jan 2012 at 12:55pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. Every January, people rush out and get a gym membership, set a list of goals or resolutions, and get ready to take on a new year of frenetic activity. Unfortunately, we don’t often clear space to make room for all this new stuff. The beginning of the year is a [...]

by Leo
6 Jan 2012 at 12:19pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. So you’ve been putting off tackling your clutter for months, maybe even years. Papers pile up on a counter, shelves are crammed full of books and magazines and other things, closets are stuffed to the point of spillage, clothes pile up on the floor or furniture, boxes and furniture and [...]
How to Have the Best Year of Your Life (without Setting a Single Goal)
by guest
5 Jan 2012 at 9:15am
Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Jeff Goins of Goins, Writer. This new year, do something different: stop setting goals. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results, then making resolutions for another year is a sure-fire way to drive yourself crazy. I did [...]

Dalai Lama

Here is your Tuesday STORY on: The power of the voice can instil a point of view and make it sound true, when in fact it is false. In these writings I don't dwell too much on any specific religion, as all have qualities of wisdom within them. However, today's story could have been written about any religion as the plot would ring true in all. But it is the doubting, and the convincing way it which it appears to have been told that convinces those who encountered the professor. We can be convinced with the sound of a voice and not it's content. Whilst the story illustrates this with some clarity, it is the opposite effect we need to be aware of. Our OWN speech will determine so much in our life, we need to observe how it is presented. Well chosen words come from a calm centre. As you may recall wisdom is best contemplated from a calm centre, so equally so should we consider SPEECH as the main way we express ourselves. The elements of speech are beyond what this short introduction can teach us, but the main element must be truth. If your speech contains the truth, the tone and quality of your voice will alone testify to its content. SELF DEVELOPMENT: There was a professor of philosophy there who was a deeply committed atheist. His primary goal for one required class was to spend the entire semester attempting to prove that God couldn't exist. His students were always afraid to argue with him because of his impeccable logic. For twenty years, he had taught this class and no one had ever had the courage to go against him. Sure, some had argued in class at times, but no one had ever really gone against him because of his reputation. At the end of every semester on the last day, he would say to his class of 300 students, "If there is anyone here who still believes in Jesus, stand up!" In twenty years, no one had ever stood up. They knew what he was going to do next. He would say, "Because anyone who believes in God is a fool. If God existed, he could stop this piece of chalk from hitting the ground and breaking. Such a simple task to prove that He is God, and yet He can't do "it." And every year, he would drop the chalk onto the tile floor of the classroom and it would shatter into a hundred pieces. All of the students would do nothing but stop and stare. Certainly, a number of Christians had slipped through, but for 20 years, they had been too afraid to stand up. Well, a few years ago there was a freshman who happened to enrol. He was a Christian, and had heard the stories about his professor. He was required to take the class for his major, and he was afraid. But for three months that semester, he prayed every morning that he would have the courage to stand up no matter what the professor said, or what the class thought. Nothing they said could ever shatter his faith...he hoped. Finally, the day came. The professor said, "If there is anyone here who still believes in God, stand up!" The professor and the class of 300 people looked at him, shocked, as he stood up at the back of the classroom. The professor shouted, "You FOOL!!! If God existed, he would keep this piece of chalk from breaking when it hit the ground!" He proceeded to drop the chalk, but as he did, it slipped out of his fingers, off his shirt cuff, onto the pleat of his pants, down his leg, and off his shoe. As it hit the ground, it simply rolled away unbroken. The professor's jaw dropped as he stared at the chalk. He looked up at the young man, and then ran out of the lecture hall. The young man, who had stood, proceeded to walk to the front of the room and shared his faith in Jesus for the next half hour. 300 students stayed and listened as he told of God's love for them and of His power through Jesus. (Unknown Author) QUOTE: "Be a craftsman in speech that thou mayest be strong, for the strength of one of the tongue, and speech is mightier than all fighting.' (Maxims of Ptahhotep, 3400 BC)

What teachings in Budhism do atheist find to be useful?
I have recently started looking up Buddhism and the Dalai Lama which to me has been very helpful. I think Buddhist were the first to teach me about secular meditation and secular prayer which to me has been very helpful. When dealing with stress and overcoming my emotions. Also philosophy wise the Dalai Lama's teachings are very insightful and helped me to understand compassion and altruism better. Also have made me think about on which progress is useful and that which is damaging to earth. Ive learned allot about environmentalism by studying Tibetan Buddhist traditions and their way of life before china took over. Has shown me how we can be at harmony with nature and respect the animals that inhabit it. To me his teachings have made a profound impact in my life. I hope to learn more im not interested in the spiritualism of Buddhism but in the Humanitarian views of Buddhist and their environmental awareness. Im glad to finally find a community that lives up to what most left want is the protection of the environment and protection of the wildlife. That they also found a way to build a community that did not take too much from the environment and made it their responsibility to protect. Also I have seen the Altruistic teachings in Buddhismm to be in line with my own Ideals. Also that the Dalai Lama's teachings on Altruism has given me a better insight into how to be more Altruistic. Thats very true and I have found Those teachings in Budhism very useful LadyB Thats very true and I have found Those teachings in Budhism very useful LadyB

Anyone else here think the Dalai Lama is full of cr@p?
I know it's oh-so-popular to revere the Lama because of his "spirituality", but really, is he any different or any better than any other religious nutjob? He claims to be the reincarnate something or other. Anyway, I've read a couple of his books. Seems like a buncha self help crapola. Agree/disagree? Why or why not?
