by Leo

‘He who is contented is rich.’ ~Lao Tzu Post written by Leo Babauta. There has been little in my life that has made as much an impact as learning to be content — with my life, where I am, what I’m doing, what I have, who I’m with, who I am. This little trick changes [...]

‘Begin at once to live, and count each separate day as a separate life.’ ~Seneca Post written by Leo Babauta. I’m not a rich man, nor do I fly around the world and drink champagne with famous people in exotic locales, nor do I own a sports car or SUV or a yacht. And yet, [...]

How to Fail at Habits
by Leo
24 Apr 2012 at 11:28am
Post written by Leo Babauta. Before I learned how to change habits, I was stuck. I kept trying to change various habits — running, eating healthier, waking earlier, getting out of debt, ending procrastination — and I kept failing. I got very good at failing, in fact. Looking back on those days, given the power [...]

Why We Overplan
by Leo
17 Apr 2012 at 8:40am
‘A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.’ ~Lao Tzu Post written by Leo Babauta. There is something about my mind, and many people’s minds, that is overly optimistic. We think we can do so much each day, and so we overplan. We fill our plans with so much, confident [...]

Controlling Your Thoughts

Here is your Thursday STORY on: ADAPTING TO CHANGE: Is change an important part of your life? It is integral! It is like the wind in nature; let me explain: GREAT BARRIER REEF Most people would be aware of the Great Barrier Reef, stretching some 1, 800 miles from New Guinea to Australia. Tour guides regularly take visitors to view the reef. On one tour, the guide was asked an interesting question. "I notice that the lagoon side of the reef looks pale and lifeless, while the ocean side is vibrant and colourful, " a traveller observed. "Why is this?" The guide gave an interesting answer: "The coral around the lagoon side is in still water, with no challenge for its survival. It dies early. The coral on the ocean side is constantly being tested by wind, waves, storms - surges of power. It has to fight for survival every day of its life. As it is challenged and tested it changes and adapts. It grows healthy. It grows strong. And it reproduces." Then he added this telling note: "That's the way it is with every living organism." (Unknown Author). That's how it is with people. Challenged and tested, we come alive! Like coral pounded by the sea, we grow. Physical demands can cause us to grow stronger. Mental and emotional stress can produce tough-mindedness and resiliency. Spiritual testing can produce strength of character and faithfulness. If you want to feel the wind through your hair a little more often, then be ready for the changes in life. These changes are more certain than even the very things we expect to happen. "Be good at dealing with problems and with change. Little is more certain to happen, both today and tomorrow!" QUOTE: "Within you right now is the power to do things you never dreamed possible. This power becomes available to you just as soon as you can change your beliefs." (Dr. Maxwell Maltz, 1899 - 1975, Author). [[ct]]: Controlling Your Thoughts

Does it seem like I have schizophrenia?
I took a thingy that has some of the symptoms and deleted the ones that didn't apply. Examples of Physical Symptoms---- --Overly acute senses- lights are too bright, sounds are too loud. --Staring, while in deep thought, with infrequent blinking. --Clumsy, inexact motor skills --Sleep disturbances- insomnia or excessive sleeping --Movement is speeded up- i.e. constant pacing Examples of Feelings/Emotions---- --The inability to experience joy or pleasure from activities (called anhedonia) --Sometimes feeling nothing at all --Appearing desireless- seeking nothing, wanting nothing --Feeling indifferent to important events --Hypersensitivity to criticism, insults, or hurt feelings Examples of Mood---- --Sudden irritability, anger, hostility, suspiciousness, resentment --Depression- feeling discouraged and hopeless about the future --Low motivation, energy, and little or no enthusiasm --Rapidly changing mood- from happy to sad to angry for no apparent reason (called labile mood) --Severe Anxiety Changes in Behavior associated with schizophrenia ---- --Social isolation- few close friends if any. Little interaction outside of immediate family. --Increased withdrawal, spending most of the days alone. --Becoming lost in thoughts and not wanting to be disturbed with human contact --Replaying or rehearsing conversations out loud- i.e. talking to yourself (very common sign) --Finding it difficult to deal with stressful situations --Inability to cope with minor problems --Lack of goal-directed behavior. Not being able to engage in purposeful activity --Deterioration of academic or job-related performance --Inappropriate responses- laughing or smiling when talking of a sad event, making irrational statements. --Frequent moves, trips, or walks that lead nowhere Examples of Cognitive Problems Associated with Schizophrenia ---- --Ruminating thoughts- these are the same thoughts that go around and round your head but get you nowhere. Often about past disappointments, missed opportunities, failed relationships. --Becoming incoherent or stringing unrelated words together (word salad) --Frequent loose association of thoughts or speech- when one thought does not logically relate to the next. For example, "I need to go to the store to buy some band-aids. I read an article about how expensive AIDS drugs are. People take too many street drugs. The streets should be clean from the rain today, etc" The need to go to the store to buy band-aids is forgotten. --Racing thoughts --In conversation you tend to say very little (called poverty of speech or alogia) --Suddenly halting speech in the middle of a sentence (thought blocking) --Often not responding appropriately and thus coming off as cold, distant, or detached. --Difficulty expressing thoughts verbally. Or not having much to say about anything. --Difficulty focusing attention and engaging in goal directed behavior --Poor concentration/ memory. Forgetfulness --Difficulty understanding simple things --Obsessive compulsive tendencies- with thoughts or actions Examples of Delusions---- The most common type of delusion or false beliefs are paranoid delusions. These are persecutory in nature and take many forms: --Overpowering, intense feeling that people are talking about you, looking at you --Overpowering, intense feeling you are being watched, followed, and spied on (tracking devices, implants, hidden cameras) --Thinking that people can read your mind/ or control your thoughts Examples of Hallucinations---- --When people hear voices inside their heads, it is as if their inner thoughts are no longer alone. The new voices can talk to each other, talk to themselves, or comment on the person's actions. The majority of the time the voices are negative. I'm extremely paranoid. I see things in the shadows. I'm scared of stupid things. I know a lot of people don't know that they're becoming 'sick', but it says that they often don't know, not that they never know. Oh and also (I just feel like mentioning this) whenever I look at pictures of people I get really freaked out because I swear they're looking at me. Sometimes I even see them blink.
