Bipolar disorder is difficult to diagnose,
and it often gets confused with other mental illnesses. Because mania is
the hallmark of bipolar disorder, the depressive episodes sometimes get
overlooked. The Harvard Health Letter notes that people with bipolar
disorder typically spend much more time depressed than manic. In fact,
years of depression may go by between manic episode
The manic episodes of the disease can come in a milder form, called
hypomania, which can feel pleasant and imbue a person with exuberance,
energy, and optimism. But hypomania may have negative consequences if that
confidence leads to excess spending or promiscuity.
Although bipolar disorder is well known for its mood swings, the
depressive and manic aspects of the disorder sometimes overlap, making
people tense, restless, and despondent at the same time, according to the
Harvard Health Letter. This manifestation goes by several names, including
mixed state, mixed affective state, and dysphoric mania.
Being Bipolar
Bipolar is a term that often refers to something with two opposing poles;
the prefix “bi” meaning two while polar refers to the two different ends.
Usually one pole would be negative and the other positive. It is not
required that the two poles should conflict with each other, only that
they occupy separate extremities.
Many objects can be described as bipolar. In electronics, science,
mathematics, and medicine, bipolarity can be a state for so many things.
Even politics has bipolar aspects. Our planet, the Earth, is bipolar. It
has the North and South Poles.
Bipolar can mean having opposite or contradictory charges, ideas, or
elements. It can also refer to two ends opposite each other in physical
position.
The most common use of the term bipolar is in reference to the medical
condition of manic-depression. A person with bipolar disorder usually
experiences extreme mood swings. He or she can feel ecstatic, as if on a
high, which abruptly drops into a deep stupor. There are three main
categories that describe certain degrees of bipolarity - bipolar I,
bipolar II, and Cyclothymia.
In international politics, bipolarity occurs when two countries are in
direct conflict with each other. A notable example of bipolarity in
politics was the Cold War. It was a hostile stalemate between the United
States of America and Russia. Two powerful nations opposing each other.
For electronics, bipolar devices can have two opposing electronic charges,
describing how the machine works. It can also be a descriptor of how the
device is designed.
There are many things in science that posses bipolar characteristics.
Bipolar can refer to two opposite reactions in one organism or material.
It can also refer to the symmetric appearance of certain objects and
specimens.
The term bipolar can be used to describe a variety of things. They only
have to posses two opposite poles or ends to fit the term.
