Editor’s Note: This is a guest post from Tyler Tervooren of Advanced Riskology. I used to have a lot of bad habits. I still do, but I used to have a lot more. Here?s just a small sampling: I woke up late and went to bed early. I procrastinated on my most important work. I [...]

Creating Silence from Chaos
by Leo
27 Jan 2012 at 3:20pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. We are often afraid of silence, because its emptiness feels idle, boring, unproductive, and scary. And so we fill our lives with chaos, noise, clutter. But silence can be lovely, and therapeutic, and powerful. It can be the remedy for our stress and the habits that crush us. If we [...]
The Habits That Crush Us

‘Don’t panic.’ ~Douglas Adams Post written by Leo Babauta. Why is it that we cannot break the bad habits that stand in our way, crushing our desires to live a healthy life, be fit, simplify, be happier? How is it that our best intentions are nearly always beaten? We want to be focused and productive, [...]

‘All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.’ ~Blaise Pascal Post written by Leo Babauta. Think about some of the problems of our daily lives, and how many of them would be eased if we could learn to sit alone, in a quiet empty room, with contentment. If [...]

‘Everything is practice.’ ~Pele Post written by Leo Babauta. When we learn a martial art, or ballet, or gymnastics, or soccer ? we consciously practice movements in a deliberate way, repeatedly. By conscious, repeated practice, we become good at those movements. Our entire lives are like this, but we’re often less conscious of the practice. [...]

Clearing Your Life for a New Year
by Leo
9 Jan 2012 at 12:55pm
Post written by Leo Babauta. Every January, people rush out and get a gym membership, set a list of goals or resolutions, and get ready to take on a new year of frenetic activity. Unfortunately, we don’t often clear space to make room for all this new stuff. The beginning of the year is a [...]

Post written by Leo Babauta. So you’ve been putting off tackling your clutter for months, maybe even years. How to Have the Best Year of Your Life (without Setting a Single Goal)
by guest
5 Jan 2012 at 9:15am
Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Jeff Goins of Goins, Writer. This new year, do something different: stop setting goals. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results, then making resolutions for another year is a sure-fire way to drive yourself crazy. I did [...]

And Happy

Here is your Saturday STORY on: SOLVING PROBLEMS: If you are a generous person, people will be generous back. If you are a mean person, or a scrooge, then it will be you who grumbles about every other individual not being too helpful. So it appears to make sense that whenever possible 'sew your seeds of goodness' then they will eventually arrive back in your lap. Give out happiness; you'll get happiness flooding back. I'll give you two quick examples of negative thoughts and positive. Thoughts related to what mood and feeling you outwardly express. Walk through a supermarket all grumpy and sad, and I would gamble you meet nobody you know and you'll not remember picking anything up. Walk through with a smile on your face and you'll meet all your neighbours, your long lost cousin, your aunt Connie and your old school pal. Be happy and your life will improve. Here is today's story... GOOD THINGS About a year ago, a couple with three children moved into the apartment next door to me. I never hear any noise from the children, but the parents were always yelling at the kids, not in a constructive tone, but more on the threatening side. When I am in my bathroom it is quite loud. We met often in the hallway when we were coming or going. I always spoke, but the only answer I ever got was a hello from the four-year old girl. I usually go out for breakfast and one day when I returned they were just coming from their apartment and the little girl was holding the door open for the others. I remained in the car doing unnecessary things because I wasn't too eager to be snubbed. The parents were telling her to hurry and get in the car (they were parked next to me). I looked up and saw the little girl was still holding the door open, waiting for me. I am handicapped to the point that I can't hurry at anything, but I hurried as much as I could and thanked her. She was smiling from ear to ear. That afternoon I was at the K-Mart and I saw a white teddy bear. I thought of the little girl and said to myself, "I bet she would like that" so I bought it. I forgot to tell you how much I was touched by her act of kindness. I wrote a note saying how much her act of kindness had touched a soft spot in an old man's heart and I didn't even know her name. The next day there was a knock on the door and it was the little girl and her father. She was so proud of her bear and thanked me like I had never been thanked before. Then I noticed her mother and the other children were there in the hall too. The mother and father both thanked me. Now when we meet in the hall we all speak, and in a friendly manner I might add. As time passes, I don't hear that yelling as often, in fact, hardly at all. Last night we had about 4 inches of snow. I looked out at my car and wondered how I was going to keep my doctor's appointment because I can only exert myself just so long and then rest for a while. I didn't have that much time. The temperature was zero, so I bundled up and went out to remove the snow. When I opened the outside door, there was my car with all the snow removed. I can't express how I felt at that moment. The man next door was the only person I knew in the whole building, so when I saw him the next day, I asked him if he was the good guy that removed my snow. He said NO. He wanted to but his wife said she wanted to do it. Isn't it amazing how the small kind act of a 4-year-old girl can change so many things for the better? My guardian angel says that more good things come from small acts. (Russ Grover - 84 years old). QUOTE: 'Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.' (Jim Rohn, American Business Philosopher).

How come i want braces now...lol?
I have perfectly straight, white teeth. Im 13. My dentist is in love with my teeth. He rambles on about how I am his best patient and how I take such good care of my teeth, which I do. He told me there IS always the option to get braces, but it would be completly unneccessary. But Ive realized how good braces look on some girls, because it makes them look cuter and happier and...i dont know i guess cute is the only word. Now, i want braces. Which is weird because braces would be like the worst thing in my life to me a year ago. Despite my "perfect teeth", should i get braces? I would probably look better with them in my opinion, crazy as it sounds. But i don't want to waste my parents money and go through pain that I dont need. Help? Thank you!

My friend is fake with other people?
Okay so I have this friend, let's call her Jane, and we're both friends with these other two girls mallorie and Nicky, Jane has been friends with mallorie since 4th grade and I've been friends with Nicky since 4th grade and now were all kinda friends haha. I also have a really close friend named lizzie but she's not friends with my other friends. Jane and I became friends this year (I knew mallorie and Nicky before) and we got really close, so we were all friends, and I've noticed Jane is constantly trying to be friends with everyone and it gets really annoying. Like when we're with other people Jane gets super peppy and happy and everything these people say is just HILLARIOUS. Mallorie says Janes always been that way. One time when it was just me and Jane and this girl we kinda know she COMPLETELY ignored me just to talk to this girl we never talk to, like we couldve all talked but Jane was so focused on acting all perfect for this girl, when were with other people she acts like a perfect person, like not her normal self, (which is already great) she just tries to act TOO happy. When I try to tell her and ask her why she does it she gets all defensive and turns it around on me. Today it crossed the line though. It was lizzies birthday so I decorated her locker and Jane found out and bec theyre in the same gym, SHE decorated Lizzie's locker, and they don't even really know eachother. I don't want to confront Jane because when I've told her things that bother me that I think she should know before she just turns it around, but I just don't know what to do, I love her but sometimes she just really pisses me off.
